claire05
Hi all and new to this site, so hope I am posting in the right place. I have a 2002 fiesta 1.4 tdci the car as been great but now, it's playing up. A couple of months ago I noticed that the car had started to lack any humph under acceleration or going up hills. Pulling away felt like you were in second gear not first. So I had my annual service done early, the problem continued, then a few weeks ago ecu fail. Called AA, lovely bloke, checked codes and it threw up: Posti-Cruise Control Brake Circuit A - as far as know I do not have cruise control? P0812 Unknown Fault P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation - Amount Insufficient The AA man disconnected the egr valve sensor which is by side of the battery and cleared codes, took it for a long drive and he said it lacked alot of power, would not make it up a steep hill in first and acceleration still poor. He took a look at turbo and checked injectors as best he could and said they were fine, as do my mechanics. Thought it might be down to egr valve stuck in open position so a couple of days ago I had egr valve blanked off, can not afford full clean and possible replacement so close to Christmas. Anyway whilst car feels a little more torque at low revs, idles quieter. and sounds more brrrrrrr when driving (sorry not sure what to call the sound) it sounds like I have had a supped up exhaust fitted. The car still feels like pulling away in second when in first, still takes ages to gain any speed, have to drop gear and accelerate the revs up to 3000- 4000 to get speed up, crap on hills, so engine gets hotter because of so many revs. Oh and not sure if this is happening or in my head but when accelerating and the power starts to fall it is like you can feel it under your foot on the accelerator it is like a sudden slip or quiet spot not sure how to explain it. Oh forgot to say the car will also cut out if say turning or doing anything at low revs whilst the clutch is pressed in, always done this so not sure if it is useful information I just don't ride clutch at low revs anymore :) Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Have a great Christmas
MONDEO TXS 2.2
Blanking the EGRV has solved that issue - but your inlet manifold you well be clogged with carbon which isn't helping When was the fuel filter last changed ? P0812 is indicative of a faulty reversing light switch and / or wiring
claire05
Thanks/Diolch Mondeo txs 2.2 for your reply. I replaced the fuel filter a little over a month ago along with oil change, oil filter and air filter do it every year. I had bought a ford original fuel filter but the sensor from the filter that was on the car did not fit so had to quickly buy a uni part filter with sensor (ford want 60+ pounds for sensor alone). AA man said the filter may be the issue, but my mechanics say no, uni part are good filters? Oh and I do only use BP ultimate fuel. What do you think I should start with; should I get another fuel filter first? Any recommendations? Ok the inlet manifold, you will have excuse me whilst I used to do all my own work on my petrol golf mk1 and fiesta mk3s, I lack confidence with this engine. I am assuming that cleaning it is a big job? Would the injectors have to be removed? Sorry if my replies are coming back slowly. Oh and my reverse light works Ok.
MONDEO TXS 2.2
I'd go with a genuine Fraud fuel filter first & then add some decent fuel additive ( Forte or BG244 or Archoil ) to a few tanks of fuel & give the car a good thrashing & see if there's a difference. What kind of driving do you do ? Lot's of short journeys or longer high engine revolution driving ? I know Powys has a distinct lack of Motorways ! :)
claire05
Thanks again I am a bit of a wanna be rally driver, mostly short trips where I can get up to 60 for some of the way and once a week trips some along A40 and A44 were I do manage to get it up to 60 for a bit longer, but as I am sure you know a tractor, lorry or slow driver will eventually slow you right down and I do not have the power to overtake anymore :( . If you know Ceredigion, driving in Powys is like that and alot like much of Carmarthenshire (you have the M4). But the lack of power, especially on hills, is difficult to deal with since hills are not lacking as you know? One minute I can push it up 60 on the flat, but have to floor it which I did not have to do before than hit a little hill and the revs drop massively, it slows right down , and even dropping gear does not seem to make it go faster, it just refuses to pick up much speed ; no good for normal driving in Wales. The problem is the ford original does not come with the sensor and I can not afford the ford sensor, I will maybe take the unipart one off and see if that sensor fits the ford one I have. If it does I am going to Yorkshire in January but from where I am it takes at least 2 hours to get to a motorway so just nipping onto a motorway to give it a thrashing is not so easy. I will google the fuel additives I did add one recently one that diesel garages use that cleans injectors and water from the system can not remember what it is called at moment. Again sorry if my replies are taking a little while, doing loads of stuff ready for tomorrow.
MONDEO TXS 2.2
No problem Claire - I, like the A.A. man think this could be a fuel filter issue, try the additive & see what happens & maybe consider a Terraclean
GingerFlame
Definately consider a terraclean. Plenty of members on here will stand by it
claire05
I will change fuel filter after Christmas, add some additive and take it for a long drive to Yorkshire. At least there with the help of my dad I can strip it down and check line pipes and give it all a good clean; it all did look a bit gunky when doing the egr blanking. I will have a look into the Terraclean. Again thanks and have a great christmas.
Garryboy1888
What about the MAF. Have a look at that. Someone mentioned spraying with electrical contact cleaner and allowing to dry. I had MAF go on my Audi s3. Caused the car to drive like you are describing. On my s3 I unplugged the MAF sensor and it drove perfectly. So I replaced it. thejeremyevans
yep it could be a dirty maf sensor. have they done a smoke test to see if you're leaking air from any hoses
claire05
Hey guys and thanks for your replies Just seen your posts today; broadband issues. Just unplugged MAF and took it for a quick spin power back to old self so will be ordering a new MAF sensor today. Hopefully all sorted. Again thanks.
Garryboy1888
Could try cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner spray. £4 from Halfords. Leave it to dry and see if it helps. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
claire05
Hi thanks. I am looking into that right now, since ford quoted £180+ VAT, unipart £60 and a local motor spares place £120. Might as well have a go for £4, nothing to loose.
