Featured Replies

i got new turbo replaced and it was going fine for some time then i noticed the 3000rpm locks which wouldnt allow me to go higher than that
couple of days ago i noticed the car wouldnt pull like it should and it was reving even lower to 2500 rpm
when i looked under the bonnet i saw this

What was the reason other turbo failed and did they rectify the cause of the failure.

I'd have a look at the piping from where the oil spray originates and look for any splits or cracks.

Have some Rev the engine and observe for leaks, cracks.

If there are cracks you will not be able to build any boost

previous turbo failed because pipe that goes to turbo was clogged with oil

i am taking it this week again to mechanic

I am guessing this is the 1.6 TDCI, the DV6 is know to have these issues, you need to properly replace all the lines otherwise the next turbo will fail due to oil starvation.

The 1.4 tdci also has the same problem

If you google "1.6hdi turbo failure pdf" there is a good document that is worth a read if you have a spare half hour, it will give you an understanding of the problem. And how to really rectify it, as it will be a money pit of you don't get everything that has to changed now changed. I think there are kits available but it won't be a cheap fix. read the document for information anyway.

the engine in question is/was used in fords, Peugeots, citreons, mini and Volvo diesel's amongst other with some manufactures getting more bother with this problem than others.

It nearly put me off buying mine, but it was only 8 months old so decided to go for it. I believe the manufactures have made altercations in the last few years to help and the problem may not affect the newer cars I'm not sure, but my advice to anyone with this engine just now would be plenty oil and filter changes (I do mine every six thousand) better safe than sorry, and you shouldn't go far wrong if you keep on top of all the other servicing too.

Also worth noting that some people put the turbo failure down to injector seals failing due to heat on (usually on the 3rd cylinder leading to a carbon build up and the knock on effects from there of blocking the oil pickup and starving the turbo of lubrication.

Unfortunately as in your case buying used its basically down to trusting the service records which is always a little risky. good luck and let us know how you get on.

The 1.4 tdci also has the same problem

Both engines aren't that well designed but I have seen a lot more issues around the 1.6 than the 1.4 - probably due to the fact that the turbo on my 1.4 is so small even if its clogged it will still get enough oil flow!

The OP's photo of their engine bay is the reason why I went with the 1.4 rather than the 1.6 as unless I owned the 1.6 from new I wouldn't know what the service history or how well it was looked after. If the engine had a 100% perfect service history and was correctly maintained then I wouldn't have an issue with having the 1.6 - in fact my dad has the DV6 engine in his C3 Picasso.

btw this happened after the new turbo was fitted
at the beggining i could hear the flutter sounds that the turbo was making but after while it stopped
not sure what the problem now is , maybe it is not related to the turbo

btw is egr blanking going to help?

You can fit another brand new turbo but if the oil lines aren't changed/cleaned out then the next turbo will usually fail the same - the oil lines get coked up due to carbon and soot making its way into the oil, is why the engine oil is usually black soon after you change the oil on a diesel.

It could be worth checking that the engine breather pipe is also clean and unblocked - its the smaller tube just in front of the turbo which links the rocker cover to the intake - might be worth taking the pipes off before and after the turbo and double check everything, you might find the source of the oil if its not the turbo.

The EGR blanking will keep the intake cleaner due to the fact that it doesn't coke up everything in soot and oil.

problem fixed
mechanic told me he changed gaskets and everything was clogged inside , gave it a good clean and now i am out of limp mode and car pulls nicely

do you recommend using additives in the fuel tank
i have ordered redex diesel treatment for 4 treatments and i am thinking of using it 4 times a row on full tank
it is supposed to clean injectors and give better performance on the car
not that i believe it much but i wouldnt hirt to try

You'll soon find out IF its not been properly cleaned out!
