Fiesta spare wheel necessary?

Featured Replies

Hi.

Im getting my new fiesta this weekend, and it just occurred to me that I didn't add the option of a spare wheel. Would you recommend having a spare wheel? And if so, is it possible to get one after I receive the car?

Thanks

John

It comes with compressor and stuff so a spare wheel isn't technically needed. But if you did have a blowout I guess it'd be beneficial to have one. Pretty sure you can purchase one after. You don't have to buy one from that garage as far as I'm aware unless you wanted the full alloy

So if I were to buy a spare wheel online, would there be space to put it beneath the boot, as there would have been if I had got one with the car?

depending on your alloy and tyre size (if you've went for 17inch alloys with say 205/40) you could possibly get a 14 or 15inch steel wheel with ford fitment with a standard tyre for a spare, I think the spare wheel holder quite shallow.

yeah there is space for a spare in the boot as usual, its used for storing the compressor and sealant kit etc.

ok so ive ordered my car with the 16 inch alloys.

There are two things im looking at on ford parts uk.

http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/ford_fiesta_15_space_saver_spare_wheel_kit_from_2014_onwards_f_KITSPARE17_c_1103.htm

http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/ford_fiesta_14_spare_wheel_and_tyre_kit_2012_on_f_KITSPARE24_c_1103.htm

Im not sure which one would be a better fit for my car, any help would be appreciated

By looking at the top link it doesn't come with a tyre but I'm not sure on what you'd need with it only being 14 or 15 inch

Of course you can buy a spare wheel and tyre, just depends on how much you want to pay and what having it means to you.

If you get a puncture at 0200am, 100 miles from home what are your options?

Pump in your gunk supplied by Fords with an air compressor. Hope that it seals and that the punture is only small. The gunk is not a gap filler. Go to tyre fitter and buy a new tyre and wheel, because I doubt that you will get the fitter to clean all the gunk out of the tyre and rim.

Jack up and put on your spoacesaver wheel.   Limited to 50mph and a distance of 50 miles.

Buy a full size wheel and tyre to suit your car, Jack up and change wheel,  get home go to bed, leave wheel on car until whenever. Get punture repaired in your punctured tyre.

Ebay, Gumtree are ideal places to buy a full size or spcesaver wheel as is the for sale ads on this site.

I bought mine. 17 inch with tyre, (£300 at Fords) for £60. A jack and brace for £15. Yes it does fit.

Thanks for the advice, ill wait until I get my car at the weekend and then see what size wheel i will be able to fit into the space in the boot. If I can fit a full size wheel in then thats what Ill do.

Thanks

Great so you can fit 16" full size tyres in the boot well?

You can fit a full size wheel, 15,16,or 17 inch into the well.

I bought the standard spare wheel and tyre when I bought my car.   Wouldn't consider the latex tyre kit for two reasons:

a)   My wife has the Type 1 Latex Allergy and she wouldn't be able to use it.

b)   Once you've used the latex repair kit you have to buy a new tyre and a new latex can.

However, the pump that comes with the repair kit can be retained and makes a first class tyre pump.

You might be able to save about £20 getting it from the dealer you're buying the car from. Even more if you bought used from ebay/gumtree/scrappies.

About the old spare wheel vs gunk kit, spare wheel. I used the gunk kit once; it's absolutely crap.

I opted not to have a space saver and instead got the tyre repair kit in a polystyrene tool ray.  A ratting in the rear of the car developed about 6 months after taking delivery of the car and it drove me nuts - so after stripping down practically the entire rear of the car, it turned out it was this tray causing the rattle.  I tightened the retaining screw as tight as possible and even tried packing around it, but nothing stopped it other than removing it entirely.

I tried putting in a 15" full size spare from a Corsa I had lying around (just to stop the boot floor sinking into the gap without the tool tray in place) but it wouldn't fit in the gap - the tyre was too fat I guess.  I've subsequently bought a 15" Fiesta space saver on Ebay for £23 - rattle is gone, life is good.

Now if only the door cards and rear view mirror would stop rattling and I could work out how to fix an issue with the rear seat life would be good...you wouldn't think it was only 8 months old - still enjoy the car but doubt I will get another Fiesta unless the next gen has better build quality - the 10yo Polo it replaced had less rattles.

If you bought your car from a Ford Dealer with a warranty, it's up to them to sort you rattles out.

Just bought fiesta ecoboost 2013.I bought a full sized alloy wheel with tyre which fits in the well fine,  the screw that held the holding bracket is not long enough because it was for the space saver wheel, I doubt I'll find a longer one.

Hello Keith, not quite sure if your expecting an answer from a 5 year old dead post. I would expect that a bit of threaded stud could have been bought and easily fashioned in to a bracket.

I have used studding with a wing nut and a lock nut on '07 Fiesta and '10 Fusion to secure full size alloys.  With your shiny alloy in place, if you screw in an slightly excessive length of studding till it bottoms out, unscrew it a few threads, put the plastic retainer in place, then wind down your nuts you will know where to trim the studding for length.  You might need to put a penny washer between the lock nut and plastic retainer as a load spreader.

Remember, if your getting rid of the gunk stuff you'll need something to remove the wheel nuts for your new spare wheel. Standard wheel brace is pretty crap.

Something like this will do the job.

Slighttly cheaper if you shop around.

I have one of those type of spanners , very good, as said, the type the car makers supply are not much good, too short , not enough leverage.  But with those telescopic ones they vary in quality. I looked at wilko because it was cheap but reviews suggested it was not up to the job.
