MK6 Fiesta GEM Module Issues (Central Locking)

Featured Replies

Hi, i am fairly new to this club so not sure if this is the right place to ask.

Anyways.. i have a ford zetec 3 dr 2007 1.25 ..im making it into a st replica so looks practically like one now anyway with bumpers and seats. There was just one last thing that i wanted to add and that was remote central locking. so i got a kit of eBay and attempted to fit it. i cut two wires from the GEM box and connected them to the new central locking box but it did not work, i then cut the boot popper and connected it to the box and that worked..... however i reconnected the cables using connector blocks to the gem box and also the boot popper... to start from fresh. And nothing worked??? the boot popper didn't work on the button and neither lock or unlock now works centrally with the key? all indicators and others work. but just not the wires i cut? there seems to be a correlation. i checked fuses nothing gone. I put a voltage on which i believe to the unlock/lock cables and there is a constant 12 volts coming from gem module? i heard that the gem module may need resetting? is the case? I've ordered a OBD usb thing to play around with using the computer to try and get it working again.. please try and help and let me know if i need to reseat something for this to work.. anything would be great thanks.. you can text me also 07580051431

thanks

We need details of the exact wires cut & re-used. If they were outputs from the GEM, and the Ebay unit was faulty, or they were connected wrongly, the GEM outputs could have been damaged.

Hopefully you have ordered a modified ELM327, if so download Forscan, as that can diagnose GEM problems, and initaite GEM self tests and other useful things.

A bit about Forscan:

James (jeebowhite) has done a nice guide: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=21196

For an ELM327 adapter, see
https://tunnelrat-electronics.fwscart.com/

you will also need a program called Forscan, its free and you can get it from

http://forscan.org/download.html

Hi, Thanks for reply.

i cut the orange and black and the green and black cables. from the two first sockets on the GEM. The box i got from eBay was a 5 door but had the same numbers on the front?? and yes i ordered a CAN HI LOW modified one and was going to use it with ELMconfig software as this seemed to look good. Is FORSCAn better? what else do you think i may ahem done to the GEM unit as do they normally need resetting after unplugged ?

thanks

Forscan is better for diagnostics, service & maintenance tasks. ELMconfig is better for modifications, & customisations.

So they are both worth having.

GEM units should not need resetting after being powered down, or unplugged, though when powered up they may lose certain settings (one touch windows are an example in some cars), and revert to a factory default state. Those settings would have to be reactivated.

It is just possible it has reacted to a fault by going into a safe mode here.

Forscan should be able to reset the module, and to perform some sort of self test within the module. Sometimes just dis-connecting the car battery for a few minutes can reset a module that is misbehaving, though this is not very common.

Hi elmconfig didn't work so i used for scan which gave me these DTC codes...

B1519 - Hood switch circuit failure

B1310 - Power Door unlock circuit failure.

This is helpful as i know there is a problem with both of these, but i am unsure on how to fix. All wires are connected properly. i was wondering whether i busted the relays inside the GEM unit in the old and new one?

thanks for reply.

Good new that you have Forscan up & working. Not so good news is that while the codes do help narrow problems down, there can still be several possible causes.

The Hood (aka Bonnet) switch will be an input to the GEM. Typically this will be connected to ground (body) when the switch is in one state, and left open with the switch in the other state. If you can identify this wire, you can test it. Measure the voltage present with bonnet open & closed. If no voltage is present, measure the resistance to ground.

Inputs to the GEM are normally not easy to damage, they should tolerate any input voltage between ground and full battery voltage (up to 15v). Very rarely, connection to battery voltage can damage one if it is normally used with 5v energisation, But I doubt if that is the case here.

The Power Door Unlock circuit is likely to be an output from the GEM.  Again, if you can identify the wire, measure the voltage present.

Outputs from the GEM may be more susceptible to damage, either by short circuits to ground when the GEM is energising them, or by shorting to battery voltage. On the basic Focus, the electronic part of the GEM activates relays (one for the Drivers Door & Fuel Filler, one for the other door(s)), that supply 12v, via fuses, to the unlock motors in the doors. Fiesta likely to be similar.

I believe that Forscan can initiate a GEM self test routine. If so, try it, just in case it gives another clue.

You could also try clearing the codes, disconnecting the cut wires (one at a time, perhaps), and re-running the test.

Without a circuit diagram, I can not pin the circuits down to wires, colour codes or connector pin numbers.

Also I am not sure what "old and new one" means. Was the "new central locking box" a complete GEM unit?, or just a remote control unit? Data on that box / kit, and the relevant instructions that were with it, might help.

Peter.

On trying to fit a alarm and keyless entry to my fusion 2002 I ended up with the same thing where my central locking wont work now, I know its my fault as I connect a wire from the keyless entry part of the alarm to a live on the car when it should have been to earth (stupid me) so I purchased a second hand GEM box all with the same codes on it as I was told by a auto electrician that the GEM was the problem the second hand box works ok but still no central locking so instead of paying a electrician I purchased a OBDII and used forscan and I reset all faults and then I did a full test and it said there was no faults with the GEM but it came up with one saying door unlock fault and to check wire as it could be earthing to positive so in a day or so I will go over everything and everywhere I messed with while trying to fit the alarm

Do you have logs of the Forscan runs? This should list all the modules that it found.

I ask this because some cars have basic electrical door window & locking motors, controlled directly by relays in the GEM. But some cars have electronic door modules that communicate with the GEM, and with each other, over the car's CAN bus & LIN buses. These modules then control the locking and window motors in their doors. These modules should be in the Forscan list, if found.

It could make a big difference to diagnosing any problems, and to trying to fit aftermarket locking systems. A 2002 car, and a 3 door Fiesta, are both more likely to have the basic electrical version, but it is worth checking.

Christopher's fault sounds rather similar to Robbie's one.

Hi,  have just read the post of the aftermarket alarm being installed and I have just run into the exact same problem.  Can anyone tell me if the above matter was resolved angst what to look for please

  • 1 year later...

 i have a ford fiesta mk5.
i changed the old gem of my car
with a new gem to have the remote control on my key
The car locks and unlocks  normally but when i have the back door οpen does not light the light of the cabin.
αnd shows no open door sign in his car's organs
Τhe  old numder gem is 4S6T-15K600-BB
ant the new is 4S6T-15K600-CB
