egr cleaned eml came on

Featured Replies

Hello all .

Please be gentle its my first post.  I had a badly split inter cooler hose on my mk3 mondeo 2.0 tdci that i have just replaced as it is easier to take the egr valve off to get it on a the bottom end ( i am cursed with big hands ). As i had the valve off anyway I noticed that it we very coked up so i cleaned it out at the same time and refitted. all had gone will or so i thought but now the eml has come on !!!!!

Is this normal and if i get it turned off /reset will it come back on again?????

please help.

Steve

Is yours the electronic type egr?

  • Author

not sure it does have an electronic connector on the end. looking around a different pics it seems to be the standard one fitted at the front of the engine on the left hand side when looking at the engine. i am hopeing it will stay off if i get it res.et

depending on year of car it's either vacuum or electronic, yours sounds like the electronic type.

If everythng is back together properly and the connector is plugged in then I can't see why the light is egr related. I have removed mine many times and never had a problem doing so.

Just seems to be a coincidence that never had it on before then I change the hose and clean egr and it's on now. The only thing I can think of it I did not tighten the jubilee clip up enough at the bottom of the hose fist time and car ran very sluggish for a second when I put my foot down then it would pick up and tack off. I readjusted the hose and tightened the clip right up now it runs absolutely fine. Best it has run for a long time. The only thing I can think of is the the loose hose may have trip the light to come on. If not I am at a loss . Please any help or suggestions will be very welcome.

Hi,

It would be worth investing in a diagnostic scanner yourself, I think. Having to go to a garage or get someone to read it & reset it every time is a real pain. And could get expensive.

These cars have inbuilt diagnostic facilities, which are the Only way to narrow down the possibilities, in most cases. And there is a wide range of available gizmos that you can use to access these diagnostics. Having some idea of what is wrong can reduce stress, and sometimes save money, when things do go wrong, as is inevitable at some time. My recommendations would be:

1) Get a generic OBD2 scanner. From about £10.00. I got a U480 off Ebay, worked fine. Very easy to use, self contained, but limited capabilities. OR

2) Get a powerful Ford specific system, like Forscan. Cost £15.00 for the interface. Needs a computer of some sort. (COM port, USB, Bluetooth or WiFi interfaces available). Not as simple as the self contained OBD2 scanner. You will find a lot about ELM327 & Forscan on this site, which together provide a very comprehensive diagnosis & maintenance tool. Post here if you want more info. James (jeebowhite) has done a nice guide: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=21196

For an ELM327 adapter, see
http://www.spanglefish.com/TunnelratElectronics/index.asp?pageid=516992

The Forscan programme is free and you can get it from
http://forscan.org/download.html

Note: Simply reading the codes can do no harm, and does not change anything. Just do not reset the codes (and you would have to ask the scanner to do this) if you are going to take the car to a garage.

Without knowing what the code is, is is anybody's guess as to the cause. It is amazing how often some work causes an apparently unrelated fault to appear, just the disturbance can make an imminent problem become an actual problem.

Would taking the valve off checking it opens ok and refitting help . I have ordered a scanner the u480 will be here Tuesday. Will car be ok to drive like this?

If it is an EGR error, then it is no problem, just annoying.

If it is a more serious error, then the car will go into a reduced power mode (sometimes called limp mode), and you should notice this. If so, more urgent investigation is called for. But otherwise just keep a bit of an extra eye of things like oil level, engine temp, water level, until the problem is identified.

Hi took it to the garage this morning. No error codes  at all exept a low pressure reading from egr which means the light will not go out. Aaggghhhh

Not sure I understand that, was the low pressure reading a code?

I guess the ordered scanner is not there yet?

And does the egr valve look like below? If so, it looks to be vacuum operated via a little solenoid valve somewhere, and the 3 pin connector is probably a position feedback sensor.

All questions at the moment, but the exact code(s) behind that light are important.

Add missing Pic.

What was the code that come up regarding the egr?

you car will be a euro 4 so electronic egr not a vacuum operated type.

I only saw the screen for a sec but I glimpsed no error codes and something about the egr and what I thought I saw from the brief look I got was low pressure. The garage it very good I have used then for years and they have actually talked me out if having expenses work done for the cheaper option before and they have been right. I completely trust them for many reasons. He didn't say I needed a new one but I should have it looked at to find the issue. And that it is ok to drive as it is just the egr.

It is ok to drive, but there is a problem that with the light on, you can not see if some other error occurs (unrelated), that needs more urgent attention. Unless you religiously check for codes after each drive!

If the light is on, it would be Very odd if there was no code.

And another type of EGR (electronic) is shown here, does that match? (I added the missing Vacuum pic to my last post)

It's tge first pic took the valve off and gave it another even better clean then reassembled it in casethere was some dirt stuck in it. my scanner came today plugged it in and sure enough I had 1 error code P0405.  EGR flow sensor A circuit low input. Clear it and it stayed off this time. All I can think is I didn't clean it well enough the first time or the loose  jubilee clips etc the sensor off as the car has never run as well as it dose now. And no code showing after a 15 mile drive. So fingers crossed.

Like I said I only had a fleeting glance at the screen at the garage and I wasn't sure what I was looking at. He didn’t charge me though
