Featured Replies

i get a call today the car is book priced at 7  hundred so thats what i will get back

this is me out of pocket any advice

You could reject it and try for more, you'll need proof to why you think it's worth more (ads for the same spec, miles, condition etc) they probably won't take much notice though.

i have pointed this out to both parties insurance / repairer but yeah i guess i am out of pocket sod's law i guess

You paid £1000 to bring your car up to standard, it doesn't make it worth more. A car is only worth what it's worth unless someone wants to pay more for what ever reason. Book price is based on condition, mileage  and age. Your car is worth what every other similiar car is worth. Buy the salvage and see if you can get more than £700. Also consider that your car is 14 years old.

I can only echo this, don't spend on your car more than its worth as you never know what's around the corner, when a car reaches the point it's no longer financially viable to keep the car, it's time for a spares or repairs advert and moving on

As said you are insured for a like for like replacement car in this eventuality unless you have a guaranteed value policy.

So you will be paid out the current market value for the car based on age, mileage and condition.

Not for new tyres, or repairs or anything else done to the car whilst you own it to make it better.

You can try and prove the offer is too low by looking for similar condition cars with same miles for sale currently and you could even try and argue the toss if say you had put 4 new tyres on very recently for example, they will be unlikely to improve the offer but you may get a slightly improved offer but not by a great deal.

£700 quid payout for a 14 year old car is not a bad offer to be fair in my opinion.

And let it also be a lesson, spending £1000 on repairs on a car worth less than that is bonkers in my opinion, this is something we are seeing more and more now, especially with DPF's and more complex clutch systems. once a big dollar item breaks as a point in the cars life it is either the value or more than the value of the car's worth.

You can always buy the car back and get it repaired, but its a lot of agro unfortunately.

If you can get cars of similar age, mileage, condition etc on the likes of autotrader, you can argue it and can sometimes get more, but not guaranteed.
