Ford Eco Mode Scores

Featured Replies

So i was fiddling with my menus in the car the other day trying to get bluetooth to work (still not working) and i came across the ford eco mode page which has 3 categories and it scores you.

All of mine are full apart from the 'anticipation' section which has no score! I know its to do with braking etc but I don't see how i can brake any less ahaha!?

Also my MPG is terrible. 32MPG, soon as i fill up it seems to go down seriously quick.

Its a petrol, of course the MPG will be terrible.

10 years ago yes...  Now with stratified injection and small 3 cylinder turbos, petrol MPG shouldn't be horrific these days...

However I'm guessing Fraser does a lot of stop/start, short journeys on a cold engine...

I've just got an St-Line 140 which is essentially the same as the red edition. I've only got 220 miles on the clock so I'm taking it pretty easy . Looking at my Eco mode scores I've got full marks on the anticipation & speed and 3 for gear changes, mostly down to having been driving an automatic for the past 7 years. I keep forgetting to change up to a higher gear.

I would imagine the anticipation score you are getting is low  due to braking too hard/suddenly or lifting off and getting back on power suddenly. If you are driving it in a sporty manner which your low mpg would suggest it's going to affect your anticipation score. Likewise a lot of stop start town traffic would do the same, especially if you are accelerating briskly then braking hard between each movement of traffic.

I'm not driving particularly slowly, 75 ish  on motorways and 55-60 on the A roads and I'm getting about 47mpg Avg, I'm sure that will rise to well over 50 once the engine has loosened up a bit and I have got into the habit of changing up a bit earlier.

I do a 17 mile commute into work which starts off with a 2 mile continuous uphill (maybe 1:20) twisty B road on a cold engine ; 40-50mph, a 2 mile section of stop start A road (often takes me 10 minutes for those 2 miles) Then a 10 mile blast up the A1M with the first few miles about 30-50mph due to heavy traffic at a busy slip road and then up to normal motorway speeds for 8 miles. Last 3 miles are a series of roundabouts into town where I rarely get higher than 3rd gear or 30mph.  On that journey I usually get about 52mpg avg.

I didn't have any trouble with the bluetooth, seemed to work perfectly with my Samsung Galaxy S6. Just had to ok a few access requests on my phone screen and enter the number shown on the cars display and it's connected fine ever since. What are you trying to connect to it with?

Hi Mate,

Hope you're enjoying the car they are great little things. I think it may be my journey to work causing this. I go through a large area of housing with speed bumps to cut down waiting time in queues, this is 2nd gear the whole way with speed fluctuating and braking before speed bumps. I then go to a main dual carriageway but this is very stop start too. It is only a 2 mile journey. Then my multistory car park at work, 1st gear due to rather big speed bumps but going 10+mph between them. I drive at the speed limit but I think i could maybe be less aggressive on the acceleration up to the limit.

My Bluetooth wont even show on my phone and every time i try to click add Bluetooth device on the car it just says 'initializing please try again'

You'll never get decent MPG doing a 2 mile stop start journey on a cold engine no matter how you drive unfortunately.

Tbh, getting over 30mpg for that really isn't bad lol!

I feel sorry for your suspension and tyres though, sounds like you're constantly bumping over speed humps!

lol yeah its atleast 10 mins of my 15minute journey haha.

I do a lot of stop/start short journeys with a cold engine in Nottingham city centre and I get around 40mpg.

Should i try resetting my trip to see if MPG changes?

Yeah not ideal conditions for good mpg. But worth resetting, especially if you try and change your driving style a bit, otherwise results will be skewed by the average you got so far.

I'm keeping a record of mine along with the fuel I've bought and will do a comparison of the real mpg versus the displayed avg once I've done a few thousand miles.

And yes, great fun little car feels good to drive and is going to be more than quick enough for my needs I'm sure.

If I can get it to Average over 50mpg on the daily commute it will save me over £45 a month on fuel compared to my previous car.

I'd be tempted to walk if it was only 2 miles. Unless it was a really crappy day. Save your car from the daily humps  and save some  money.

My 2003 Renault Clio DCi would do mid 70s around town, more on a longer drives, I haven't seen any modern petrol engines that can get close to diesel MPG?

You obviously know how to drive for mpg, most people don't!

Gotta admit I'm sceptical about 70mpg round town, even with the lack of weight in an old Clio.  My old 106 non turbo diesels only managed 67mpg combined so presumably less in town but never did a whole tank of town to work that out.  But they were horrible...so I'd rather lose a little mpg for more safety, comfort and spec.

The ecoboosts actual combined figure for most people is around the same as the diesels in equivalent cars...not forgetting cars are now heavier with more tech to power etc, and diesels are now fitted with DPFs that eat fuel.

If you drove both a 1 litre EB and diesel equivalent I reckon you'd be surprised how close it gets to the diesel...

My Mum drives a 1.2 petrol Swift in rush hour every day and averages 55-60mpg, my sister drives a 1.0 C1 and gets over 60mpg.  Granted not as big as the Focus but I can't beat their average in it!   I've been really disappointed with modern diesel MPG tbh, it doesn't seem to have got any better since the X reg 306 HDis I had...I honestly expected far more from the DV6 in the Focus!  The next most modern diesel I've had is a 2006 Vectra CDTi...that only managed mid 40s!!

I'd second this. My Fiesta is probably only doing about 32mpg. My Corsa 1.3cdti probably did about the same. 280-300 miles to a tank in that. The Fiesta is probably going to get 250 on 0.75 of a gallon less fuel. Its only my 3rd tank though.

All town driving. Journey of about 5.5 miles, lots of traffic and red lights.

Does it still generate eco scores when you are not in eco mode? Silky question I'm sure. I have got all of the leaves.

not sure, I haven't tried it yet. Eco mode only gives you the gear change light along with collectiing the eco score data doesn't it?.

pretty sure it doesn't do anything to change engine to a more economical mode so may as well leave it on unless the gear change light annoys you.

Unless i'm wrong about what eco mode does?

I know what eco mode itself does. It cuts the engine's performance a bit, makes the air-conditioning cut out slightly earlier, sacrificing some comfort. Basically ruins the car somewhat.

I just wondered whether the eco scores only get generated in eco mode, or whether your driving is assessed regardless of whether eco mode is on.

My 1.4tdci 2012 fiesta has an average mpg of 52.5 at the moment. Can't seem to get it any higher now though. It was on around 40mpg when I got it in February though.

I can't see any mention of the eco mode on the fiesta modifying the engine performance/ throttle response etc... seems to me it's just monitoring your driving style and giving you ratings so that you've got an idea where you could improve your mpg. I know some cars have eco/sports modes that change the engine characteristics but I don't see any evidence of this on the Fiesta.?

some fiestas have a button called eco that reduces engine performance and ac comfort amongst other things to improve fuel economy. its in between auto stop/start button and parking sensors button and is different to the eco flower petals which just monitors you driving style

ah ok, I haven't got a button there, just one to turn the auto stop start off.

Cheers for the replies folks.

Mine has bumped up to low 60s with the induction kit, can't push it anymore, not a hugely economic engine unfortunately.

mines still at 33, pain in the ...........
