Help

Hi all,

I am a new member to the forum but could do with some help.

I own a 2004 Mondeo 2.0 tdci and have blanked off the EGR valve with a solid stainless steel plate but since I have done it the engine seems to have lost power especially in 4,5 & 6 gears, it used to fly up steep hills in 6th but now even on moderate hills I have to drop down to 4th and then seems to only want to rev to about 4000 revs and seems to take an age to pick up speed.

I have serviced it recently and fitted a new air filter but it still seems the same. Someone has told me that the turbo maybe knackered which sounds very expensive.

Am I being totally stupid and missing something or could the turbo be knackered.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Jon

I suggest the first step is to test it without the blanking plate. It is a myth that all EGRs can just be blanked. The pcm knows the air flow is not correct. It uses the MAP & rpm to work out how much air goes through the engine, then the MAF tell it how much new air is entering. The difference should be the EGR flow. When blanked, the MAF reading will be higher than expected. This may have a knock on effect on the turbo operation.

I have had the EGR blanked & unblanked at various times on my 1.8, and the point at which the turbo starts to cut in does alter.

A major problem with the turbo would raise error codes (DTCs), and probably put the MIL on. So hopefully it is not that.
