'03 Mk6 Speedo backlights not working

Featured Replies

Hi there, I was hoping someone could give me some advice on this. I recently bought an 03 plate 1.6 Ghia, and she's lovely, but a little problematic in the dark because the lights for the speedo and rev counter don't work! I've read that instrument cluster problems seem to be a common issue but all the other lights are fine, no problems with the needles etc and I've checked the fuses as well. So, assuming it's just those specific bulbs that have gone, I opened up the cluster thinking I'd find those handy twist-lock LEDs...nope, it looks like this.

I assume any replacements would need to be properly soldered? That's definitely outside my skillset. Getting it repaired properly would be expensive I assume...I paid £745 for the car and I'm a tight ***** so I was hoping someone could let me know if there was a cheap/easily done myself solution? Thank you!

I have not seen inside one of those first hand myself. are you sure the bulbs aren't push in bulbs in the holder. If not, then soldering is the only way. if you know someone with soldering iron and gave them the new bulbs with the circuit board it would only take 5 minutes.  have you got any old TV repair shops near you (I know they are rare now). if you went in one of those with the circuit board and new bulbs they might do it while you wait for very small outlay.

Ah that's a very good point about them being push-in! I'll have another look soon, hopefully that'll be it, otherwise thank you for the TV shop advice, I do actually have one very neaby believe it or not. Cheers!

Hmm, it seems there's no way to access the side of the board the bulbs are attached to because of the way the needles are attached! Looks like there's no way in...damn, does anyone know of any good ways to light the dials from the front?
