Cold startup issue (Fuel pump?)

Featured Replies

The car is a 2005 Ford Fiesta, 1.25 petrol.

Ok so this problem ONLY happens when it's cold, like under 7-8 celsius. During warmer periods of the year there is no issue. The problem is the following:

When the car sits over night the next day when I go start it up I turn the key to on position, wait a few seconds and start cranking. Now I dunno how else to explain it but the engine normaly goes like AN AN VROOM, but in this case it just goes AN AN and then just stops. The dashboard is still lit, there are not noises or anything, it just stops. Then I return the key to off, turn it on again wait a few seconds and the car fires up immediately. For the remaining time of the day the car will start up normally and without issues. The problem will only happen if it sits over night.

Now my old battery died recently so I replaced that with a new one like two weeks ago. Tested it and it seems fine. 14.0-14.2 volts with engine on and low beams + radio + heating on. While engine is off and cold outside around 6C it is about 12.4 volts and it drops to about 10.8-9 volts when you start cranking so that's also fine.

Someone mentioned that the problem could be the fuel pump, when the car sits overnight and it's cold the fuel pump doesn't build enough pressure initially so there is not enough fuel and the cranking just stops. Could it be a fuel pump issue? Or is it something else? The car has NO issues beside this, it idles fine, runs fine etc.

Thanks, cheers!

May sound odd but are you pressing the clutch in when you turn the engine over. Had this issue when left and cold starting. Pushing the clutch in starts every time. All I can think is as the engine is cold the added strain of turning the engine over without the clutch engaged causes it to struggle to turn over.

If it stops cranking then it's probably to do with the battery or starter (or other electrics).

How old is the battery?

Yes I do press the clutch every time. The battery is like 15 days old and the voltage on it seems just fine.
