Dipstick Rattles Loose

Featured Replies

Evening all,

Recently I went to check the oil and noticed my dipstick was loose - as in it wasn't inside its 'port' but was out such that stuff could go down into the shaft. I put it back and checked again the next day and sure enough, it was out again. My theory is the vibration from the engine is rattling the dipstick loose so that it comes free from its place.

My question is, is this a problem? Should I be concerned and try to secure the dipstick in place somehow? The car drives fine and hardly uses oil, its a 3 year old 1.6 turbo diesel.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Sounds like a blocked sludged breather increasing the crank case pressure meaning the dipstick pops out - how well as the engine been serviced? I am hoping it has a full service history with the correct oil every 8k miles else there will be quite a lot of very expensive issues - look up 'DV6 issues' on Google - you can see why I avoided this engine like the plague.

I bought it from a main dealer, its been serviced regularly and like I say, it doesn't seem to have any engine issues. How would I confirm this is the case? Is this something I can get diagnosed? The car is still under warranty!
