Ford Sync Problems and Queries

Featured Replies

Me again, still getting used to my new car!

My Fiesta has (I think) Ford Sync Gen1 installed (it's a non-touch screen system, with a Sony radio with an unfathomable number of buttons, and the small screen in the middle of the dash is blue). It has a lot more features and settings then my previous CD-Radio deck in my 2007 Fiesta.

Couple of problems or queries though that I wondered if you guys had answers for:

  • The system will only connect with one phone at a time via Bluetooth. Can it connect to more? (I have a work phone and a personal phone and it would be useful to be able to make/receive calls from both without having to manually select the "live" or "connected" phone)
  • When the system is connected to my Android phone (LG G4) it has previously downloaded all of my contacts. In fact I can select "Mum", "Dad" or whoever else from within the system so it has obviously done this, however, it does not display the contact name during an incoming call. I have to try to work out who is dialing me by recognising/remembering the phone number displayed on the screen. Is there a fix for this? Or is this a problem with the way Android stores contacts on the device?
  • How do you use apps with the system? I have downloaded a couple of Sync compatible apps from the Google Play store but the car doesn't recognise they are running (Does the phone need to be connected via USB?) and I can't work out the benefit of having these (there also doesn't seem to be very many apps at all available!)

It doesn't look like the firmware has ever been updated since the car was new (the menu says I am on v3 although the number wasn't the same as any other I've seen posted on the web) but would a software update fix these issues? I see there used to be a way to get hold of updated software via Ford India but that appears to be closed now - is there another way? (except paying a dealer a ridiculous amount of money!). What is the latest version for this model?

Thanks

In case any of the 58 people that have so far read this are having any similar problems I've been doing some tinkering and investigating and have come up with the below:

  • The car will only allow you to connect to one Bluetooth device at a time. I think this is a major design oversight. After all, how often are you in the car with your partner who also has their phone, (granted, they can make/take calls without the need for handsfree when not driving) or how many of you have work and personal mobile phones? Also, my phone can connect to multiple devices at once (my watch, my speaker, my handsfree kit, my "find it" tag for example) so my car should be able to connect to multiple phones at once.
  • The reason the names don't appear on the screen appears to be down to the way Android (or at least my phone) organises contacts. Unless the contacts are saved to the phone itself, it doesn't appear to want to display the name on screen. All my contacts were instead synced to my Google account. This doesn't make sense however, as the phone book has downloaded all of my contacts with their names and numbers, and as far as the car is concerned it should just be reading the number that is calling from the phone, looking up the name it has matched to that number in its own memory then displaying the name. I've only tested this theory so far between my work and personal phones calling each other while in the car, but it seems to have worked.
  • I'm no further along with getting any apps to work with the car. Does anyone have any information or help on this? All the videos I've been able to view on YouTube etc refer to American cars and iPhones, and while the systems should be near enough the same between USA and UK, I just can't get the damn thing to work with my Android LG G4. Also, any app recommendations?

Thanks

Hi, I'd be interested to know some answers to these questions too, just picked up a 14 plate fiesta 1.0 ecoboost Zetec. It has what I presume is sync 1.1 with applink (although i'm unsure how to verify this) as above its not touch screen and is all blue.

I've connected via bluetooth ok and I can make calls and play music through my moto (lenovo) G4, however I'd like to use spotify but I can't fathom how to get the app to work with the car. There doesn't seem to be sufficient information anywhere.

Kingdave, if you put your vin in here what sync version do you get? http://www.ford.co.uk/OwnerServices/SYNC-and-Bluetooth-Support/MobileCompatibility#/?utm_source=FordOwnersClub&utm_medium=ForumLinks&utm_campaign=referrals

mine says 2012 so i wonder if its got applink (even though it shows it in the menu)

Edit to say: This morning I tried a different app, to see if that should show up, nothing. I think i'm going to try a different mobile device, see if that works.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I think now that my car needs an update, this is the sync version my car displays, i assume this is why its not working. Dealers are no help and neither are ford customer service.

you have 1.0 version, you wont be able to use spotify or any other apps. updating wont make any difference.

i dont have an android, but my iphone wont show caller ID unless its been unlocked since it first paired with my work van (VW Crafter)

have you tried getting someone to phone it whilst it is paired and unlocked?

Hi Iantt, thanks for your response, if thats correct why do I have an option on my menu called sync applications? its really confusing.

No idea, mines the same as yours.
