Mk6 cold heater / low coolant / temp gauge 1bar / fan never on

Featured Replies

Mk6 1.4 duratec diesel 2003 very slightly warm / low coolant minimum / temp gauge 1bar all time / fan never on........where should I start????

Is the top hose hot at all? The fan will never be on unless its overheating, sounds like a thermostat that is stuck open and overcooling the engine.

Top hose not warm mate

Definitely sounds like the thermostat has gone.   When they go, as a safety device, they remain open so the engine will never overheat.

Does sound like the thermostat is stuck open, when the engine is cold open the expansion tank and see if there is coolant circulating, I have a feeling that the thermostat might be stuck open causing the engine to be overcooled.

Easy to change though, just 4 bolts on the side of the engine plus a few hoses, part is cheap - think I got mine for something like £20 on ebay, just make sure you have some additional coolant as it will drain some of it but not much. Also removing the brake vacuum pump which sits above it helps with access to the rear bolts (only 2 bolts holding that on).
