Bought car as first car to do up, need some help.

Featured Replies

I bought a Ford Fiesta Zetec-S (2002) broken. The person said they was driving, the car stopped fine and then wouldnt start up again and made a ticking noise. I decided to buy it as a project for my first car so i could do it up cheap as I don't have that much money, and I stripped it down with my dad today the engine is seized at startup and We found that one exhaust valve has bent, and another snapped, both on the same cylinder. the one the snapped off has damaged the cylinder and the cylinder head. The plan is to clean up the cylinder as its not scoring the bore, shown in the pictures, on the cylinder head, we assume its scrap, however it doesn't to appear to of damaged the sealing face where the valve seats, has anyone got any experience about cleaning it up?

its a 1.4L Zetec-s EFI DOHC (75/80PS) engine

Thanks in advanced.

The reason for the damage is probably a broken cam belt.

i agree it's almost certainly broken cam belt (not necessarily snapped cam belt, but teeth stripped off cam belt) . if this was mine I would replace the valves and if they seem to go in and out of valve guides fine and seat properly then I would use the existing head.   I can't remember what the rocker arms are  like on these. I had a mk3 escort cvh engine where the valves were damaged like this but it had also bent the rocker arms.

For the money you will spend on valves and skimming and reseating you would probably be better off buying a new engine as you don't know what condition the crank and bearings are in. Plus as isetta said it may have bent rockers too.

What condition are the bores in? do they all still have the factory cross hatching? The one in the picture is worn.

i can't see all those metal shavings doing any good to the bottom end either.

As above, personally I'd get a known good engine from someone breaking (hear it running) and swap that in.  1.4 engines should be pretty cheap as there were loads about!

I don't know how much the valves would cost or how much a head gasket would cost.

No idea how much head skimming would cost, have not had one done for 25 years, I don't even know where I would go, all those type of workshops seemed to have closed down years ago in my area.

I am not reccomending you do this, but if it was me and the valves and gasket did not cost too much, I would reuse the head and not even get it skimmed and see how it goes. You do not have a lot to lose by trying that.(as said check rockers also) and if all debris etc is cleaned up well then it might all work properly. I don't think anyone could definitely say there is no chance.

I don't know how much this car would be worth if going properly, or if in otherwise immaculate condition. I assume the idea is to get this going as cheaply as possible.

Getting a 2nd hand engine and installing it is not practical for everyone. I have done this before but it would not be practical now for me as I no longer have the space and equipment to do this.

Head skimming costs loads these days, admittedly they use expensive diamond cutting computerised machines but still you're looking at £70+ round here!  Did one get charged £130...And they cocked it up by taking too much off, needless to say I didn't go back to that place!

Then the gasket set, cambelt kit and head bolts are gonna be around £100.

Fresh fluids, plugs and aux belts another £50.

Only thing I haven't bought recently is valves so no sure on the price of those.

I don't think I'd be able to trust it if 'bodging' it as cheap as possible but each to their own really!

If this is truly a ZS then we'd be looking at a 1.6L Engine right?
