2nd gear issues

Featured Replies

Hi all Happy New Year!

So 2017 started with yet more problems on my Mk7.

I started noticing that the car won't stay in 2nd gear and kept popping out intermittently. More so when changing from 1st to 2nd. And this has become an increasing issue. I don't know of its just me thinking this but seems to stay when revving high in 1st.

2 garages suggested, with this info and not having had a look, that the gear box could be on it's way out!

I've had a quote by a mechanic who has a gear box which has done around 30k (£70) plus labour (£150)

My Q is multi part.

1. Does this sound right? (as in it needs changing and something that can be fixed)

2. I've had it 4 weeks now having serviced it with cam belt change and put new front brake discs and pads (pagid may I add) and having to call out a mechanic to complete the job as the discs would not budge. Do you think it's worth me continuing to do the repairs?

I ask this as at some some point the exhaust system will need replacing but is not something that would fail an mot yet. I'm sure I got told Approx £140 for that. Plus I need new tyres as well. So around £100.

There are other issues which I was hoping to look into later like the heat blower actuator clicking and the heat sensor in the centre console making a whirring noise. They may well be on their way out. Ford quoted under £200 just for the heat sensor. I imagine something similar for the actuator. But I would prob attempt this myself - simple job but a PT to get access.

I've been tempted to sell it on and cut my losses - we buy any car are offering £1500. #howtoloose2kin4weeks [emoji53]

The discs need heat and a huge hammer to say the least. They won't fall off in a hurry.

If you can do the work yourself and source your own parts, then I'd repair it and sell it privately/trade it in

If you're going to need a garage to do the work and you feel it's not worth the money, then get rid now

Didn't have a heat source. I'd already wd40'd and hammered for 1.5 days! Had to reluctantly call a mechanic out as I was stressing and shaking from the cold [emoji32]

The mechanic at one point said it will need cutting off. He then started hitting the disc from the back by getting under the car. It eventually gave way.

If I had the space and time I'd attempt the gear box myself. But both of these I don't have. I was looking at doing the exhaust system at a rented garage later in the year, but after the time I've had with the brakes it's kind of knocked my confidence.

They are solid as hell. It's a case of hitting as hard as you possibly can working your way around the discs. Works eventually

Have you considered a gazebo, and a heated blanket for the floor? Sounds silly but it works.. Just don't let it get wet haha

the gear change. if I recall correctly there are two cables (like thick bicycle brake cables) that go from gear lever to gearbox. I can't remember if these have adjusters on to set them up properly when new. I am wondering if the cable needs adjusting slightly so that when you put the gear lever into 2nd it pulls the lever on the gearbox a little further.

I once had a Capri that kept popping out of 2nd but only on the overrun like if going down steep hill with foot off throttle. Gearbox was also noisy. That definitely was a gearbox fault, but on that type of gearbox the gear lever went into the gearbox with nothing in between so there was not really anything else that could be wrong. If I tried to hold the lever in 2nd gear position it felt like something hitting it to knock it forward with quite a jerk.

Yes someone suggested that here on another post of mine and it looks great. Only prob is I only have my drive to work on. I'm guessing my fam would prefer to see our neighbours and not the back of a gazebo [emoji16]

the gear change.

I got told similar things by friends but two garages and the mechanic have suggested replacement. Though they haven't checked. [emoji52]🤔

Got two options, either go with the gearbox replacement and the other known issues and spend another ~£500 and hope nothing else pops up. Or sell for whatever I can get. 🤔[emoji53][emoji37]
