Car Engine Oil - The Recommended?

Featured Replies

Hi. I usually leave topping my engine oil up with the garage when it goes in for service or M.O.T or other work. But I check regulary.

So I dont really know whats the best oil to buy for my car. I know that my car needs 5W - 30. But when browsing online after putting my car reg into different online checks. It comes back with different names.

For example, Fully Synthetic, Part Synthetic then it will have like A1 or A5.

Are these something that I can only have one of or are they just different grades of oil that will still work for my engine.

I have a feeling that I can only have 5W-30 Fully Synthetic but not sure on the A1 and A5 etc.

I have a Ford Focus Zetec S, 60 plate with the 1.6 Petrol engine.

Any help will be appreciated.

the halfords oil is fine at £12 for 4ltrs at the mo so get stocked up,

ford oil is always fully synthetic castrol used to be A1 but they changed it to A5 about a yr ago, it can be picked up around £25-£30 for 4ltrs

so you`ll be safe useing any of them 2

The link posted for the shell oil being M2C913-B above should be ok, although the newer Ford spec is M2C913-C which is fully synthectic rather than semi, you can get the genuine Ford formula F for £19 from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Genuine-Ford-Fully-Synthetic-5W30-Engine-Oil-5-litres-Formula-F-1502263-/262625193940?hash=item3d25ae6fd4:g:nTYAAOSwwo1XdOrU

Or Opieoils sells some different brands of M2C913-C spec http://www.opieoils.co.uk/search/go?w=913c

when castrol changed to A5 there spec for ford now is  M2C913 - D , i think thats why it changed from A1 to A5.

I also have a 60 plate Zetec S petrol but the 1.8 engine and I have used the Ford formula F that kingsblue mentioned above in both the oil changes I've had since owned, I find its a great price for the manufacturers own oil, can't go wrong.

it`s re-labeled for ford as they don`t make there own oil, but if you look at the ebay link you`ll see the brand is castrol, not sure what the diffrence is with this ebay item number though  391140611936 as it has a diffrent ford product code

For me personally 5W30 fully synthetic oil is good enough, but with gear oil - specifications are far more important.
