Anyone have a second car?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone here has a second car? How much extra does it cost for insurance/ are there any insurers who will cover both cars under one policy etc. I'm thinking of getting another as a run around but only if it isn't a shed load more on insurance and tax.

A second car shouldn't be too much.  The insurer can't claim much more risk, as you won't be driving them at the same time.  My dad used to have 2 cars and I don't recall it being too much more.

That said, it will depend on your age (he's quite old), as I seem to recall him only being able to use his NCD on one vehicle or perhaps splitting it.

Some insurers do give multi car discounts though.

I have Admiral multi car for 2 cars (or more), it's not too bad, also depends on what the other car is, I found for me it was cheaper to go with Admiral for my everyday car and then Adrian Flux or a competition/classic car insurers for the other car.

many are a pain on NCD. you might have max NCD on one car (eg 65% disc) but you have to earn it separately on a 2nd car . I can understand that if you have driving by other drivers allowed, but if they are both owner only driving then charging more for the 2nd car makes no sense. this might be offset by multi car discount or introductory discount.

One company I worked for gave 25% multi car discount off both cars if they were both owner only driving. This meant it was cheaper to insure are a car of the highest group plus a car of the lowest group than just one of the highest group.

It can be very time consuming to work out which insurers are best for these kind of scenarios

I found this issue as well due to the NCB only being allowed on 1 car, however the Admiral multicar seems to apply the NCB to both cars under 1 policy which is handy, I never really got the issue with the NCB sharing - surely you can't drive both cars at the same time!
