Just been wondering on what peoples opinions are these days. 

I have a 1.4tdci and use general forecourt diesel. Toying with the idea of filling up once or twice with premium.

I know ford recommend BP but does anyone find a decent difference between general and premium shell or BP stuff? 

Honestly wouldn't bother with a 1.4 TDCi.

I've only ever used Vpower in my ST, all my other cars have had regular fuel.

our family 2007 fiesta 1.6tdci has only had the cheapest diesel (from asda/Tesco) put in it for the last 149,000 miles and has been fine. but that does not have a dpf. I do not know if you having a dpf would be different

If your car has a DPF and EGR valve (I'm pretty sure it'll have both). I certainly would use premium fuel. Burns cleaner and means it's less likely to result in blockages of either component.  However, it's something you'd need to do permanently to get any advantage from.

If you want to blitz clean the engine and anywhere else, I'd  use a liberal amount of a reputable fuel additive like Millers - http://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/fuel-oil-additives/millers-diesel-power-ecomax-500ml

Don't bother with VPower or BP Ultimate, that is just not worth it for a 1.4. However I wouldn't go near supermarket brands either as it contains more additives (hence the cheaper price). I use regular shell, just because it's a 30 second drive from my house.

I wouldn't bother using premium fuel once every so often either, I've always believed it works best long term.

I thought I'd give the 99 Octane fuel a go from Tesco for my 1.0 Ecoboost 140ps, after being using any normal unleaded since I got it. At first, obviously there wasn't really any difference made. But overtime, (at least 2 tanks) I've started to notice a slight difference in sound. The car seems to sound smoother, and of course a more lively rumble. Is there any sort of difference in performance though? To be honest, not as much as I would've liked to believe. There is a very slight improvement in throttle response, I must say for sure.

My overall opinion for premium fuel for the 1.0 Ecoboost, is that I'd recommend it to anyone. It is still dead cheap for me to fill up a tank from empty, £43 to be exact. That's only a couple of quid more than what I would of typically paid for normal, unleaded fuel. But you'll definitely save more money, I've already come to realise my mpg has increased quite a lot. :)

What's the MPG difference between the 2 fuel types on average ?

Well I've managed to squeeze around an extra week of work commuting after using the premium. So I'd say around 5-10 maybe? Maybe more, I haven't fully tested this yet actually. But there is definitely an increase, no doubt.

When using normal unleaded, I'd manage to get a full tank to last around 3 weeks, with the occasional socialising on weekends.

With premium, I'm easily getting 4 weeks. I topped up last over a week ago, and still I have 3 quarters left. 

i'm getting nearly 3mpg on bp ultimate compared to a standard 95 in my 1.0 ecoboost.

10 mpg seems ridiculously high to me 

If all these premium fuels burn so much cleaner and better, it's funny how they ain't mandatory to reduce polution. Rules on engines are getting tighter and tighter every year, but you still have a choice of what fuel you want.. 

The way they advertise these premium fuels, I'm nearly convinced my engine will be spotless inside with only hot air coming out the tailpipe.

I use Tesco Momentum 99 in my ST.
It seems to compliment my Bluefin map and definitely shows a more nippy throttle response.
TBH, premium fuel in a low performance engine without a turbo or remap is probably not going to return much benefit but if you 'feel' it is better then crack on.

If you get Supermarket Diesel, you basically end up with between 8-10% Biodiesel mixed in. So, avoid that. At the refinery(?) when the lorries pick up, the Diesel is basically the same, the supermarket's stuff gets diluted with cheaper Biodiesel. So, stick to the non-supermarket. If you go to any lower end brand like Murco you get diesel just as good as BP, Texaco etc. All the non-supermarkets vary in the additives they then get mixed in.

If you go for the "super" diesels from the likes of BP, there are additives which keep the engine from being coked up. There was test I think where they adapted a V8 car to run half its cylinders from standard fuel and the other half from super fuel. Can't remember which, but from memory it was something like BP standard diesel vs BP Super Diesel, then they ran for ages and took the engine apart. You could clearly see the difference, the super diesel's additives had kept it really clean.

As a rule, unless you want to throw money away on the likes of BP's super diesel, just go for a normal diesel by a lesser brand such as Murco or Jet (saving yourself money but still getting pure diesel), but never go for the supermarket diesels that contain the percentage of cheaper biodiesel. You can always run some diesel additive through now and again like the one from Redex if you like (if you're perceptive on throttle response you'll feel it too, not that that is what it is for, oh, and it is often very cheap on offer in Asda).

Having just bought my Fiesta Ecoboost, it's got standard 95 in the tank. Before that I owned a Corsa VXR & an Astra VXR and they only ever had either Shell V-Power or Tesco Momentum. Definitely improved the MPG (Up to a whopping 28mpg average on the Astra!) but it still went through a tank every other week.

Not sure what I'll do with the Fiesta because I'm not sure how long a tank will last on either yet, but it undoubtedly burns better and if there's an MPG increase to warrant the extra cost I'd always recommend it. 

I filled up with Esso premium last friday, since then my mpg has been down by about 2mpg compared to the standard 95 and feels rougher.

My leggy mk6 1.6TDCi runs significantly quieter on super diesel and does about 3mpg extra.

Since starting this I've only used v power nitro and its currently giving about 25miles extra per tank. 

Also the car sounds better and is definitely more responsive to the accelerator. 

i only ever run shell standard unleaded as its two of the closest to work and to my missus house dont have a station near mine, asda is two mins away from the shell but cant justify the 1/2p cheaper for the extra additives/ my parents are pretty keen on keeping to the supermarkets saying they are the same, they have a 4x4 diesel cant wait for i told you so when the dpf gets clogged.
