EGR and coolant

Featured Replies

Guys I'm at my wits end. My run of bad luck hasn't ended, and now it's no longer exclusive to my fiesta. My phone and laptop have died and now the TV. These things shouldn't matter but goes to show how dependent we can get with mod tech.

Any how this is about my 1.6 TDCI so I'll keep on track.

Car's gone into limp mode and the diagnostics indicate the EGR valve. Hoping to get some help with sorting this but I've now noticed my coolant has nearly run out! Could this be due to me driving around in limp mode for some time? Was fully serviced in Dec 2016 and had a cam change. No sign of other leaks to the naked eye.

Losing coolant and limp mode. Head gasket?

Quick way to check - look at your oil and see if it looks a bit like milkshake. I wouldn't think EGR would affect coolant at all.

I think the EGR valve has a water jacketed cooling pipe between it and the exhaust. It is just possible this is leaking into the pipe. The water would either go straight out the exhaust as steam, or through the engine and then out the exhaust as steam, and may be damaging the EGR. Either way, more whitish smoke would be visible than usual, maybe with a smell of anti-freeze.

I have not heard of this before, so it may be two independent faults, HG leaks also give steam out of the exhaust.

I think to test it, the EGR cooler would have to be removed and inspected or pressure tested.

jbell - just checked with a sickly feeling in my gut. But with relief it looks normal - for now!

Tdci-peter No smoke seen. Getting to the EGR is a mission and a half, let alone remove and play around with it! A kind fella on another forum has offered to help me install a blank. Hopefully that should fix that prob.

Over the next couple of days I'm just going to ponder on selling it for peanuts. Probably scrap yard - unless I find someone who wants to diy these issues. Don't want another idiot like me going for it and find out there's no end of work with it.

I don't have a solution, but plenty of sympathy...sounds like a complete mare. Hope you get it sorted mate!

Thank you buddy, hopefully will. Even the football has forsaken me - I need to see an astrologer or even try out charms and praying to all God's out there, maybe even some black magic. Lol. Something's got to work 😕
