Hi all - just picked up a 09 Mk7 style only 25k on the clock

the car came with one 3 button remote (flat blade) and one no button remote-

I'd like another 3 button remote as both my daughters use the car- with this in mind I've bought a used 3 button remote from ebay

my question is can I buy one of the blade and bottom part of the remotes from eBay (cut via photo) and programme this to use in the car opening it and starting it?

Unfortunately, no.

The central locking fob is easy to programme to the car, the PATS system is not so easy.

The immobiliser (PATS) system on these cars does not seem to have an in-car programming system like most older Fords. It has to be done using a computer. Either using IDS at a dealer (expensive), or some specialist locksmiths can do it (not cheap), or DIY using a system called Forscan (needs a Windows laptop, an ELM327 adapter, and some technical ability. Costs about £16 for the adapter).

The PATS chip is buried in the key somewhere, and is completely separate from the remote control, It has no battery. Every key that can start the car must have a valid PATS chip.

Some locksmiths can clone PATS chips, apparently. I.E. copy an existing one. This is not as good as a proper key programmed to the car. If you lose the odd one out, it will be more difficult to add another, as two different PATS chips may be needed to add another, unless all keys are erased first.

Many keys bought off Ebay will come with a PATS chip, that will need programming to the car.

Looking at the topic below, some lock specialists charge as little as £40 to programme an immobiliser chip. That is about as low as I have seen:

It is for a Focus, but the Fiesta uses the same system.

I priced this a number of years ago for my brother who also had a Fiesta with the older type key, and due to the nature of the key was quoted something in the region of £120.  Things may of course have moved on since then.

Yup, same as my brothers was.  The reason the cost is so high is to do with the chip that communicates with the immobiliser I believe.  Unfortunately it isn't as simple as just cutting a key to the same pattern like you did in days gone by (mind you, you could open a car door with a coat hanger in those days as well!)
