Steering issue

Featured Replies

Hi recently i bought a 2007 zetec s fiesta , the guy i bought it off said the tracking is out on the offside wheel which i will be getting done soon , but the issue i have is when i turn the steering wheel left to full lock while moving it makes a grinding noise but when i turn the wheel the to right i only have to make 1 and quater turns until full lock is this linked to the tracking being out or something completely different? Thanks.

is the grinding the tyre or wheel rubbing on something?. all sounds a bit odd.

If for example someone screwed one track rod end on 1 cm more than it ought to be, and screwed the other track rod end on 1cm less than it should be then I think you could create what you have here.

Sounds to me like it needs jacking up at the front so that both wheels are off the ground and you can turn the steering freely from one end to the other and have a look at what is going on.  sounds like someone has cocked it all up, or bent something by driving into something.

Worn driveshaft CV joint ?

Check the clamps & rubber bushes on the steering rack ?

See if a tyre is rubbing on anything ? Look for shinny bits on the bodywork & buffed up edge of the inside of the tyre!

How many rotations does it take for full left lock? If it is more than 1.5 the rack needs recentering. I wouldn't look for other issues before that is done as they could all go away as a result and the process of doing it will give plenty of opportunity for finding if anything is bent/broken.

Well when i turn right its only 1 and quarter turns until lock and the turning circle is not that good when going right but i know when you turn the wheel left until lock i think its somewhere inbetween 1 and 3/4 quarters of a turn to maybe 2 turns until lock and thats when the it sounds like grinding while moving and sometimes hear a small whinning noise while turns aswell

it does sound like  as suggested above. When the wheels are straight ahead, the rack is not centered because the track rod ends are screwed on a different amount at each end of the rack or something is bent (and maybe bodged up adjustments made to try to compensate for the damage).

it all sounds like there is something untoward that someone has tried to bodge &/or totally incompetent workmanship (like someone replaced the track rod ends and had no clue what they were doing).

Could be quite simple fix if it is just the track rod ends are not screwed on equally on the rack  or   it could be something more problematic if there has been damage and all this was an attempt to compensate for it/cover it up.
