Mk 7 Fiesta cutting out and erratic revs

Featured Replies

Hi, my Fez started cutting out today... (sorry for double posting)

Yesterday the revs were slightly lower than normal, just above the point where the car would stall, but other than that it was fine when driving.

This morning the same thing, low revs but driving ok.

Then this afternoon I started the car and the rev counter was fluctuating between about 500rpm and 2000rpm, slowly going up and down. At tickover I was having to rev slightly to stop the car from stalling.

Driving the car it was doing the same, rev counter fluctuating up and down and the engine sounded as though its running rough and whenever I stopped, at lights, or at a junction, or in traffic, the revs would drop and the car would cut out.

I limped home from work In Croydon, to Bromley and managed to get to the main Ford dealers, they said they will look at it later or in the morning, so left it with them.

Any one have any ideas what this could be?

I had a quick lok under the bonnet myself to see if I coudl see anything obvious, but didn't note anything, but then again, I'm no expert mechanic...    8-(

My Fez is a 2012 1600cc Titanium model with 35k miles and its serviced every year and has had no problems to date and I don't abuse it or drive like a *****

In the 'old days' I would've said that your symptoms sounded like classic sticking/failing idle air control valve issues. However, I am pretty sure your engine has an electronic throttle and as this will take the role of the IACV it could be that instead. A code scan and actuator test may help reveal if there are any issues with it.

^^ first port of call with anything electrical really. Get yourself an OBD2 scanner if you don't have one. It will pay for itself after the first use (garage will charge at least £20 to run a diagnostic). I've got a modified ELM327 and use Forscan to search for codes (free to download). That should tell you what's wrong.

petrol or diesel.

I agree with Luke about code reader. everyone should have one. about £15 gets something very useful

Thanx, they have confirmed (Ford Dealer) its a MAF sensor, they reckon my induction kit (PipeX which has been on the car with no probs for about three years) has "contaminated" the sensor, said they had to put a standard airbox back on to test the thing properly, wanted to charge me £400 for a new airbox, but I still have the original one (kept it when I put the induction kit on), so made them fit that back on. £400 for a bit of plastic, ***** chancers...

That's exactly why I do all the little jobs myself, anything big take to a local garage, they won't rip you off if you know a friend who goes to one etc.

Great to hear you found the problem anyway

I had this problem with my fiesta a couple of years ago turned out to be the throttle body, might be worth taking it off and giving it a clean? At the time I had to have a new one fitted which cost around £300. Had a few idle issues this year too which ended up being the spark plugs so changed them and gapped them to the correct measurement and not had a problem since, maybe looking at these two might help?
