Just a random question but does anyone know why you can make a car look older by putting an older plate on but you can't make a car look newer, is it to do with selling it?

    Putting a newer reg on would be classed as misrepresentation / fraud.

    From the DVLA website:

    Conditions to put a registration number on a vehicle

    You can’t:

    • put a private number onto a ‘Q’ registered vehicle
    • make the vehicle look newer than it is

    Must be because of fraud issues like Clive said.

    A Q plate is to recognise that the vehicle is an amalgamation of parts from other vehicles to the extent that it's original identity is not clear.
    A standard or personalised plate are not permitted, it must be a Q plate only.
