TPMS Issue

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am hoping I am posting this in the right forum but am not sure as I am a first timer.

Recently I purchased a Ford smax late 2014 model

The car has warnings on the dash for each of the wheels, check front left tire, check front right tire etc etc and the TPMS light is on.

I assume the tires were changed or rotated and I thought resetting the errors would be easy but it proves not.

I can go into messages and view the errors but cannot reset them, all tires are correctly inflated, when i check the Tire Pressure tab in the menu I only have options to select high load or low load.

I have done a lot of searches on line and have found articles that should enable you to reset the system manually but none seem to get me into the tpms reset functionality.

i am wondering has anyone else encountered this

many thanks

Reg'

From the SMax handbook-

Setting the vehicle load

Note:

Type 3 instrument clusters have a slightly different menu structure. Select Settings first to access Setup.

Correct tire pressure settings depend on vehicle load.

The system can only detect low pressure if you have entered the current vehicle load.

Press the right arrow button on the steering wheel to enter the main menu.

Highlight Setup with the up and down buttons and press the right arrow button.

Highlight Tyre Pressures with the up and down buttons and press the right arrow button.

Highlight the desired setting and press the OK button to confirm the setting.

Press the left arrow button to exit the menu. Hold the left arrow button pressed to return to the trip computer display.

Hi Stony

big thanks for the reply, I can get in now bother and do what you described.

this doesn't change anything and I still have the warnings to check each tire

this is why I am thinking i need to reset the TPMS, some threads speak of a sequence of events to follow such as turning the ignition 3 times to on position pressing brake, then the horn should sound and you can re train each wheel.

I have not found anything that will work for me and I am going mad :)

thanks

Reg

Thanks Stony871

I have ran that procedure a few times to no avail, I never get the horn to sound or the TPMS reset to initiate

there must be something I am missing or wondering is the procedure on the smax different

thanks

Reg

I do believe that you need a programming tool to make that procedure work.
As suggested, I'd approach a decent tyre fitters or possibly have a word with your local Ford dealership for advice.

thanks Stoney,

if I could even initiate the sequence i could look to see do I need a special tool or magnet or if letting air out of the tire when setting will work

think i need to contact ford

thanks

How did you get this fixed, I have a similar issue with an early 2015 ford galaxy.

Just because it's a similar issue doesn't mean it requires the exact same solution. You're also asking a question of someone who hasn't returned to this forum for 5 years. It would have been more sensible to just create your own discussion thread, explain exactly what you're experiencing and ask for advice.

If you're getting warnings about low tire pressure, the solution is simple - use an air pump to pump them back up to the correct pressure. The dash may not get immediately updated afterwards, so give it some time. If necessary, go to a tyre fitting place and they may be able to force an update with a special tool (tyre fitting places may be more likely to have such a tool than a typical garage).

If however your dash is showing no reading for one or more tyres, then especially considering that your vehicle is 8 years old, this is probably due to the batteries within the sensors going flat. You need to take it to a garage or tyre fitter, they will need to take the wheels off and replace the sensors embedded within them. Unfortunately from what I've seen the sensors are typically not designed to allow just the batteries in them to be replaced, you need new sensors. Note that it's advisable to replace all four at the same time (plus the one in the spare tyre if it has one), since if the battery in one has failed then the others are inevitably going to fail also at any moment. Note also that failed TPMS counts as a major defect on an MOT (See 5.2.3(h) - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/5-axles-wheels-tyres-and-suspension).
