  3. I'll echo what FOCA says about the blanking plate. I noticed a difference straight away. Careful with the DMF as well. If I give my car a moderate amount of boot now, there is a small amount of quiver around 1800 revs. Uh oh...

  4. Its the DPF you need to heat up - not the inside of the car! Any performance increase may be due to the DPF unblocking rather than a the remap Remaps can be done specifically to increase bottom end power, on some diesels the bottom end power/ torque is restricted to help put less strain on the DMF (dual mass flywheel) mant remappers simply increase the fuelling so the remap "follows" the original map and the "low down restriction" is still in place - a better/ more expensive remap is more sophisticated and can increase bottom end but you may need to strengthen the transmission to cope with the extrabottom end torque A tuning box often increases bottom end power/ torque more than a remap A DPF delete can reduce turbo lag by allowing the turbine to spool up quicker - along with back box delete and decat can make a big difference , (as well as a free- flowing exhaust, as lenny has suggested)

  5. Thanks Lenny, MFK Autocare is actually who remapped the car for me. I told them I would be up to their location in Westmeath in the New Year to get my DPF removed at some point. Do you know do they have a rolling road at their own garage? I actually blanked my EGR valve about 2 weeks ago using your guide (very good write up by the way!) but I didn't notice any difference with the car after doing it (maybe the EGR wasn't in bad condition in the first place?) I forgot to tell Mathew I had the EGR blanked until after he had mapped and he said that's a pity because he would of mapped it slightly different knowing that. I also have a K & N air filter fitted two weeks ago aswell. I'm assumimg that if I get the DPF removed the car will need to be remapped again?...Would the DPF have any effect on turbo lag do you know? A few cars ago I had a 1.9TDI 130bhp Passat and it seemed to have absolutely no turbo lag whatsoever which made it extremely easy to drive...I know it's a differnent car and different engine but hoping to reduce the lag as much as possible

  6. IMO the standard ST wheels look better than the alternatives you mention, & those last ones look like something I'd see on a 10 year old corsa in a McDonald's car park.

  8. After seeing the stain of soot below my exhaust after the forced DPF regeneration the tuner did today I decided I would give the car a good long drive and try clean it out to see if there was any truth in what he was saying. After work I drove 70miles out the motorway in 3rd gear at 120km/h so the car was reving at slightly above 4000rpm. I also turned on the heater and the back window heater to try get the car as hot as possible. After driving for about half an hour in 3rd gear I turned around and said I'd drive my car home normally now and see if there's any change. To my surprise there seemed to be a big difference in performance. The car seemed more responsive and there was a far stronger pull when I accelerated harder. Could not get over the difference! :) There is still a bit of turbo lag which I was hoping the map would sort but considering how the car was driving immediately after the remap there is a vast difference. The forced DPF regeneration and my 70 mile drive today must of cleared alot of the soot. As South_Bound also stated, driving in normally you would not really notice much of a difference but if you accelerate hard it definitely has far more of a pull and a kick off the turbo. Considering completely removing the DPF now as my next mod as I'm shocked at the difference it made today

  10. It is usually considered that as a car is purely a conveyance it is not deemed a suitable form of accommodation so DIC would apply. A camper or dormer type vehicle is recognised as a suitable form of accommodation as well as a conveyance so a defence of no intention to move the vehicle whilst unfit fhrough drink or drugs is acceptable. (So long as you're not in a seat with the keys in play).

  11. yeah the eonon one I believe has a special connection, there is a separate piece of software on the headunit that controls the DAB function, so it is controlled on the HU itself, I don't know how that compares to the normal radio software as its disabled unless the separate box is plugged in. Sat-nav, I might try and setup a link so folk can download a setup and working copy of it if there is interest

  18. im just wondering if there is another potential cause for carbon build up and that's the breather pipe, I had a failed o ring on that pipe and the amount of oil that must be getting ingested is staggering, I don't know the science of it all but I cant imagine burning engine oil is going to be good for anything. I have a custom made oil catch can on its way from the states which will at the very least stop oil building up in the intercooler

  19. Seems like it's really in my own intrest to get the DPF removed so as firstly since it's clogging at at 103k miles it must be on the way out and secondly I'll feel the proper benefit of the remap. Do you mind me asking how much it cost you to get your DPF removed there? Prevention is better than cure really and the price of a DPF removal is far less than the price of a new filter Hassen, the remap cost me €275...they have offers every so often though for a remap for €225

  20. Good idea Lenny I'm going to sign up to Parcel motel straight away. Is it a Pioneer headunit with carplay you have installed?...And if so what one? Dee you have a good point there. If you buy a cheap generic one and it works...great, but if you have problems with it which could be very likely than having a branded one should make all the difference when it comes to customer service. The one you have, I'm guessing it was just a straight swap plug n play was it? And do you have the reverse camera function set up on it? One thing I currently have in my Focus is voice control, I don't use it all that often but would that still be compatible with a new headuint provided it has that option?

  21. Great to hear that you got it sorted and that you had a positive experience with the people who did the remap as I was thinking of using them in the new year as well to remap and remove the dpf in my car. My Focus is the same model as yours and reaching about 103,000 miles soon. Like you said, the dpf is well past it's prime and I can definitely feel the car being less powerful. It has had the egr blanked and has a tuning box which has been performing admirably over the last 2 years. The tuning box has paid for itself by saving me fuel and I think next year it's time to get the dpf out to avoid any more problems in the future. If you don't mind me asking, how much did the remap cost in the end? In a few months time, I will email them to get a quote for remap+dpf removal. I will take out the tuning box then and probably sell it.

  22. Hi thanks for that! The breather still expells hot gasses / some oily spray even without the inlet sucking it in - the main difference is the engine does not re ingest it As the engine geats up there is some expansion of gasses (mainly air) in the crankcase, as well as some piston blow- by (depending on the age/ amount of wear on the engine + the amount of boost) as the pistons move up and down there is some to-and-throw-ing in the breather, and it can make a "chuffing" noise as this happens The main purpose of the breather is to de-pressurize or stop the pressure from building up in the crankase, so it does not matter if the inlet does not suck the gunge out Ive still got the car, its MOTd and taxed and i use it a fair bit, its "restricted" a bit to get a bit less bottom end power but more mid/ top end and its even lighter than it was, ive got a load of parts ive not fitted yet and i have a few other ideas life is a distraction/ gets in the way, though ive so little time and i cant really justify spending money on it (apart from essentials like tyres/ MOT stuff etc)- might wait untill spring now

  23. Haha no, quite the opposite! I never change up below 25000rpm so I'm always dropping back into the turbo range in the next gear. I'm no expert but I guess doing that means I'm never laboring the engine to accelerate too early (below the turbo range in any gear) and (as above) that's apparently good for economy! When I'm just cruising I always move up a gear though, I do steady 30 in 4th and occasionally 40 in 5th. Then if I need to accelerate shift back down again and go for it :P

  24. Looks good, I like how the tinted lights match the windows. Not sure about the alloys, I also prefer the standard ones but if you want it to look more unique then fair enough. Personally I wouldn't even consider lowering it, I'm no expert but doesn't that just undo all Ford's hard work which made it such a good handling car?

  30. 450NM torque, jesus that must be fun to drive :) When I'm paid in the new year I'm going to get my DPF removed as being at 104,000miles it's well past it's life expectancy of 75,000miles and although I unclogged it a bit the other day I feel it's inevitable really. Removing the DPF would definitely help the turbo breath better aswell. Kye do you have any turbo lag after getting your Focus remapped? The torque comes in quicked for me since the remap but there's still a small lag which I was hoping to get rid of

  31. I got my 2.0 TDCi done and holy hell what a difference! It has gone from 136 to about 190 horses. It's up from 320Nm to 450 or so now. Drive it sedately and it's lovely. No effort needed to get it moving etc. Start smashing the throttle and the car is a monster. Torque steer is certainly noticeable too. I'll be getting the DPF removed at some point myself as well. The guys that did my remap actively encourage it for the health of the car. They told me that DPF's are being done away with at some point in the future too.

  32. Haha I'm relieved most of all. Thought someone had tried con me out of almost €300 to have the same car perform the same that it already had. Seems to be great power of it now. My previous two cars were an Audi A3 2.0TDI 140bhp and a Passat with the same engine and power wise it feels on par with them. Might unblank my EGR valve today and clean it out and possible get my DPF removed in the future after seeing the difference it made yesterday. Thanks all for the help!

  33. I drove the tdci Focus which used to be the courtesy car at Profile Automotive, this had a Wolf remap on it and I was surprised how smooth and sweet it felt to drive. If yours is anything similar it's no wonder you've broken out in a big :D now.

  34. If the guy has a decent reputation like your research suggested then maybe give him the benefit of the doubt? Are the fault codes still present on your car or did he mean they were found and cleared before he flashed in the new map? If they are still coming up then that does suggest something is actually amiss that the car is not happy with. Try what he's suggested and if there's no difference then get your cash back and go for a map from a more established tuner. While custom maps set-up on a rolling road are the most ideal way to remap a car there are still a lot of maps out there which give very good performance increases without being custom written. Some of the adaptive capabilities of the ECU must give scope for variations for wear and different combinations of parts on the car - or at least to within the new targets and parameters the remap is working to. One thing a rolling road will show though is the before and after power curves - so you'll have a better understanding of where the gains have been made and any losses too. There's a lot more to it than just a quoted power increase especially if you consider how often you're revving the car to it's peak power rpm. Torque curve will show a better picture in lot of cases and that's what you physically feel through the seat of your pants.

  35. Could you name which remapper you went to?

  36. Yes mate you should feel the difference straight away. Especially as much as 30bhp of a difference. My mate got it done on vw Passat a while ago. he never mentioned it to me. I needed the car one day and as soon as I got into the car I knew there was a difference. First thing he asked me was did I notice anything different about the car. There was a good bit of difference in it, very noticeable. So I recon you would notice it easy enough. Without sounding nasty but there is a lot of people out there saying they can remap cars and havnt got a clue what they are doing. sometimes it can be worth spending an extra few quid and going somewhere that the tuner has a good reputation. Even a hand held one.
