New wing mirrors on S-MAX not working as they should

Both mirrors on the S-MAX were deliberately broken off, new ones fitted. They will only fold in if you lock the car, unlock the car, then lock it again. When I unlock the car the mirrors unfold straight away. The passenger side is always slower to fold than the driver side. 

The lane assist mirror did work in reverse but doesn't move back into the original position when moving forward, this has to be done manually and now doesn't even move when in reverse. 

Mechanic fitted a new passenger wing mirror again, made no difference. We are assuming nothing is wrong with the new wing mirrors as they do work but just not how they should. 

Any ideas?
