New mot old Ford diesels

Featured Replies

I've been reading about the new mot.  I like the 2008 mondeo tdci titanium, but reading between the lines will pretty much all diesels from that period onward have a dpf and consequently almost automatically be failed on mot, and not economical to fix?

This being the case should the price of those dpf diesels collapse as they will be unusable after one year or as soon as the old mot runs out?

Why would a Mondeo automatically fail?  As long as they've been driven high motorway miles as rep cars the DPF should be fine.  Aftermarket DPFs can be bought for a couple of hundred these days so shouldn't be uneconomical to replace on a 10 year old car.

The price of used diesels has already dropped off a cliff because of the media against them.

This article mentions that IF the car is fitted with a DPF that they'd check for any smoke and fail it if theres smoke being emitted of any colour. Would be a kick in the back for the millions of diesel owners with cars without DPFs and telling them to spend money on getting a DPF or spending more money getting a new car. Years ago the government encouraged people to get diesel cars as they said it environmentally friendly.

That’s the odd thing about it. Older dirtier non DPF vehicles (of which I have one) are MORE likely to pass the new MOT.  They’re not going to make you fit a dpf to a car that doesn’t have one.  The strict new tests apply to cars that ALREADY have a dpf only. Hence my question, as 10 year old and younger diesels generally do have a dpf no choice. On a ten year old diesel highly likely to be smoke that “mysteriously “ fails the new test.  Even more strictly it will be a £2000 fine if you even drive it home from the garage, so you have to fix it there and then ,at that place.

It's no different to petrol emissions, they have different limits based on age as well.  An old petrol will pass emissions much more easily than a newer one, go back far enough and they don't even need a cat.  DPF regs should have been tightened up years ago tbh...particulates aren't a new problem.  The CO2 based tax incentives to buy diesels came out in 2001, DPFs were being fitted to mass produced cars by 2004...

The £2000 fine and being forced into staying at the garage is also just scaremongering from the media.  At worst you could get a car courier to bring the car home or to another garage for ~£50 assuming you live about 10 miles from your MOT centre.

That's another silly thing about not taking the car out the MOT centre if it failed. Yes you can say your risking yourself driving a car with a serious fault however it can also be a way for these places to make money. My car failed MOT as the brake pedal would creep down all the way. After bringing it home I noticed brake fluid was leaking from the pipe which goes to the rear drum. The MOT inspector accidently made a hole in the brake pipe whilst he was inspecting the underside. I just changed both brake pipes and that sorted the brake pedal. These places should not charge the customer if they caused a problem. It also would be cheaper doing it yourself if you can.

Diesel smoke. Would a forced/static regen cure this? Or maybe a good old fashioned Italian tune up!
