climate control issue

Featured Replies

recently purchased a 2012 2.0 tdci titanium x estate. when i bought it the climate didnt seem to get too cold. so i had it regassed and its still no better. the vents on the passenger side blow out colder than drivers side even though i have set ttempetures the same on both sides. also cant seem to get the setting  mono .only auto. so set temps manually . any one any ideas as to problem.

Did it work immediately after the regas or not?  Usually the policy is to refund you if a regas doesn't make the cabin air colder immediately from major chains like Kwik Fit.

I would expect the gas is leaking somewhere, mk3 AC seems to be notorious for leaks.

Also the mono issue is a known fault with the climate panel on the mk3, you can set it as the book describes (hold auto button for a few seconds) but it'll never display 'MONO' on the panel.  Once you set it, you must only adjust the temp from the drivers side knob, if you turn the passenger side it reverts to dual zone again.

no it didnt .i asked the dealer where i bought it to do a regas as a condition of sale. he said he did. i dont know. but it was cold when i bought car so didnt notice. but it feels no better than it did for sure. i tbought perhaps the one side getting colder than other even tho i set temps the same was mayb an interior sensor or climate u it fault. praps not.

Ok, first thing to check is if the AC compressor is coming on or not.  If you look at the belts at the drivers side of the engine, you'll see the compressor is the lowest pulley at the front.  With the air con on, the whole pulley should be spinning as one.  With the air con off just the outer ring of the pulley should be spinning and the centre stationary.  I would guess that your pulley remains stationary when the AC should be on, most likely cause of that is a gas leak.

ooh. ill try to have a look. so iff ure corre t this could be a new compressor job?or a gas leak somewhere. is there a usual place? my friwnd had a pipe go on top of a headlamp. so im assumi g if theres a loss of pressure tbe compressor wont turn on?

Yeah, it's unlikely to be the compressor itself at fault, but for safety reasons the compressor won't switch on if there's not enough gas pressure in the system.

Leak could be anywhere in the system...I've been chasing mine for weeks!   Most likely place is the condenser radiator, it's the radiator you can see through the front grill so it only takes a stone to hit it on the motorway to damage it.  However, I'm fairly sure there are other common leaks on these as I've spoken to many people both on and off this forum with mk3s with broken AC, trouble is no-one bothers to fix it after warranty runs out.  So far mine has had a new condenser radiator and lower pipe as both were leaking.  But it's dropped the gas again now so I've given up and having a proper AC tech come and do a fault diagnosis next week.

well i tried to see the compressor and just about spied it. but couldnt see anything really. when i switch cli.ate on i can feel a bit of a rumble so i am assuming its the compressor starti g. judgi g by other cars iv had. it does get cold but not that cold. but my main issue really was getting colder on passenger vents than drivers side vents.even tho iv set temps the same.

took car out today in the sunshine. air con although cooler than not having it on was really worse than useless. even took about 10 mins to blow all warm air through and start blowing cool. assuming must be working to some minor degree or else it would have just blowed warm  .

You really need to check the compressor properly before we can go further.  I doubt it's working.  Also check the radiator fan is running as well, though on this weather it could be on due to engine temps so that's not a foolproof test.

The fans alone will blow cooler air into the car, if it's not ice cold like a fridge at the vents then the AC isn't working.

To bypass the cabin temp sensors, press the 'max AC' button on the drivers side knob.

id like to check it. but i just cant get to a position to see it. as per fan. i just started car up without air con on and looked at fan and it was off. i then turned air con on and went back to look at fan. it didnt come on as soon as button was pressed but then it started.slowly then faster  then slower then faster. assume this may be how it starts up . as soon as i pressed button tho i heard the compressor click for want of a better word engine sort of juddered slightly. this is how my old passat used to sound too. so i assume thate compressors working.

update. right.after you tu ing which bits move and dont move etc found that the compressor clutc is most definately working when the air con button is pressed. and not movng when air con is off. so thats gud. fan also works when air con on and not when air cons off. so mayb i should try the regas after all. praps car trader was dodgy and didnt regas after all. what i do find still tho is the drivers side vents are slightly warmer than the passenger side. and yesterday in the afternoon heat when climate was turned on it took ages to start blowing cooler   not cold   air through vents

Ok, well that's definitely a good sign the fan and compressor are working.

It may just need a regas in that case.  I'm not sure why the drivers side would be slightly warmer though.

haha. no me neither. i will find someone to do a good air con service rather than halfords or kwik fit. and see how it goes. fingers xd
