Engine malfunction

Featured Replies

Looking for some advice on my 09 plate 1.6 petrol focus. The car engine malfunctions intermittently causing the car to go into a reduce acceleration mode and displays the traction control light. Sometimes the car will not attempt to start when this message displays. After some research and and head scratching I believe it could be a faulty cluster. Has anyone had this issue before and what did they do to resolve the issue thanks

The first step is to get a good diagnostic system to check what error codes are present. The traction control light might mean a problem with the ABS unit, or one of the sensors in the ESP system. Or it could be a fault on the CAN bus that is preventing the modules from talking to each other. Either way, the best bet is a Ford specific system like Forscan, that can probe all the modules properly.

Most generic OBD2 code readers will do badly on ABS or CAN bus problems.

CAN bus problems can prevent the immobiliser (PATS) from being tuned off, and in this case the PATS LED will flash quickly, or a message will appear. The PATS LED can transmit simple flash codes, and code 16 (one flash, pause, six flashes, pause, etc) is linked to CAN bus problems.

The Cluster problem you may have read about affects the CAN bus, it is typically an open circuit on the pcb in one of the CAN bus connections. This problem has been very common on 2006 Foci like mine (!), but less so on other years. So it is a bit of a stab in the dark to blame the cluster without a bit more diagnosis.

One simple test is to thump the Fascia around the cluster (not the cluster, it is delicate!). This can cure the problem temporarily, but can also trigger it if not currently present.

I did a PDF on the problem with my cluster, and how I fixed it, but it is fairly specific to the 2006 problem, so may not be relevant here.
