Losing coolant... help please

Featured Replies

Hi all

i bought my 15 plate Ford Fiesta titanium Econetic 1.6 Diesel in January and I noticed on Sunday I’ve got a coolant leak. I’ve checked my oil and it’s totally fine which hopefully rules out it being the head gasket. There’s also no sign of leaks under my car on the road but there is a sign of it on the legdfe of my gearbox (my boyfriend thinks the gearbox anyway)!

Its booked in to the garage on Monday to be looked at but worried I’ll be fobbed off and the leak not fixed.

Any ideas?

It will be the thermostat housing leaking.

Is that a relatively simple fix? I’m a bit annoyed as the cars only just over 3 years old, has only done 19,000 miles (only 2,500 in the time I’ve had it), so im not really wanting to cover the cost when I’ve not even had it 4 months. This is a picture of where the coolant is lying (that I can find at least)...

Think £100 approx for parts and an hour to fit it.

Thank you, that’s not too bad.

I have an Arnold Clark 2 year warranty that I paid extra for when I got my car. Will this likely be covered? Thank you

Depends on what the warranty covers.

Thank you.

im hoping it does, otherwise i think according to the consumer act I can refuse the car as I’ve not had it 6 months. Don’t want to do this though as it’s a gorgeous car and so good to drive

You won't get a refund as you've had it for longer than 30 days. You should get a repair within 6 months though.

I'd say the thermostat housing shouldn't be leaking after 20,000 miles. I'd put up a good fight if they refused to do it (which they will probably try go do). The responsibility is on them to prove the fault wasn't there when you bought the car, not the other way around.

Thank you.

Had it at the ford dealer this morning and they’ve messaged me to say it’s the thermostat housing and they’ll order part. They didn’t say who’d be covering the cost of this though so I’ll need to ask when they phone me.
