Some electrical problems?

Featured Replies

Hi all, thanks for your time reading/responding to my call for help.

I need some advice, please.

I purchased my Ecoboost 2nd hand, amazing condiition - but the Auto Stop/Start never worked. Previous owner said it did work, but the paramters were set too high, so would only kick in in certain "conditions" (temperature, running time, etc).

Recently, my doors stopped auto-unlocking and I had to use the fob.

This morning I couldn't unlock the car at all. I've taken the step of replacing the car battery, but this hasn't fixed the auto-unlocking.

When I started the car after first connecting the battery, the Auto-StopStart "off" light was on. I couldn't turn this off.

The second time I started the car, about 30 minutes after. The Auto-StopStart light was no longer on and I could enable/disable it. But the windows will not open with one touch. I have to hold the bottons.

So I'm slightly confused what may be going on. I suspected the battery failing was the cause of the auto-unlock and auto-stop-start, but not sure why these - and the windows - are still acting up with a new battery. Battery was purchased from EuroCarParts, spec'ed against my car-reg.

I have managed to reset the windows, they are now working.

But can't get the keyless entry to work at all.

Sounds like you have battery problems rather than electrical problems.

The start/stop light being on all the time signals that the feature is unavailable.  This usually happens when the car detects that there is not enough available juice left in the battery to be able to start the car again after stopping.  The fact that your windows needed resetting also points to loss of battery power I think.

The keyless entry I am not so sure about if that's affected by a dead or dying battery, but IIRC, when I was having mystery battery problems, my KE was a bit intermittent too and my S/S barely ever kicked in.

Have you been suffering with dead battery type problems - trouble starting the car or anything like that?  Also, pulling any fault codes with a reader might be a helpful start if possible.  You can get a decent ELM327 cable from TunnelRat for (I think) about £20?

First step:  try resetting the battery monitoring system::

Can't figure out how to cross-quote, but here is the procedure , thanks to @iantt  (it sounds like a cheat code for Mortal Kombat on the Mega Drive but it does work!)

Ron, if you want to have a go at reseting battery monitoring, just do as follows

Ign on for 10 secs, press rear foglighr switch 5 times, press hazzard switch 3 times, wait 10 secs. Battery light flashes. Ign off

use car, and see if thst fixes

from this thread (give thanks there if it helps you):

Second step if no good, check battery voltage at the terminals with the engine running.  Should be 14v (others correct me if I've remembered wrongly).  This should let you know if the alternator is working ok.

Third step:  Take your battery out of the car and charge up overnight with a charger if you have one or take your battery to a garage to do a load test on it.

IAEF then we go from there.

Also, I'm not sure which model ecoBoost you have, but it would be worth checking ETIS to see if you have a recall regarding the cooling system.

Thanks for this help.

I have replaced the car battery with brand new (12v). S/S now works, and funnily enough my MPG has improved. Before it would not go above 38 !!

I'll try the battery monitoring reset as you described and see if that will change the KE behaviour. Otherwise, I'm suspecting that a motor/module issue?

Yesterday the KE worked once on the driver side so it's not completely dead.

To be fair sometimes I will go to the car and it wont unlock first time with the keyless system...
