Fiesta Mk6.5 - rust

Featured Replies

I noticed the start of rust on both of my Fiesta's wings yesterday. Nothing major but I'd like to do something about it. I'd be very grateful for any advice. Would it be worth replacing the wings?

No it's not worth replacing the wings. if you were really concerned about it I would clean it up well and paint with a couple of coats of hammerite to stop it getting worse. it's not worth trying to do purple down there, who's going to notice. It's probably rusting there because of the crud collected there which holds the damp. This is the kind of area I clean out regularly on my mk7.5 and also did so on my previous mk6.5.

The cost of replacing the wings and having them sprayed well to perfectly match the car would be silly compared to car value. Also if you used cheap non-ford parts you might find them corroding more in a few years time than the originals

This is one reason I moved my focus on. Rust here and lots of scabbing on the top of the wheel arches.

10yr old , 60 odd thousand on the clock. Cleaned weekly.

Thanks for the replies, guys. There's also a really nasty scrape on the rear bumper, courtesy of someone else trying to pull out of a space without paying attention. I've been quoted £150 to have it repaired but I'm in two minds about it; the car is 10-years old, 90k miles and probably not worth very much. I'm not sure if it's worth paying to have the bumper repaired - I might just keep the car and run it into the ground.

I have rust on the exact same place on my mk6.5 fiesta zetec s. Mine is worse that the paint is chipping off. My dad has something which you put on the rust and it reacts with it turning black. I have a black car so probably just put that on and leave it. Hopefully it blends in.

I wouldn't have it done. you might have that done and then something else happens to it. It's not like it affects the use of it. I would only get it done if I was trying to sell the car and thought that the increase in value of having it repaired was at least the cost of the repair.

12 years on my Fusion, no bodywork rust at all.  The underside is good, although it has been Waxoyled twice since new.  Seems Ford don't make them like they used to.

Grind it backmto white metal, rust kill it, and as it's out of sight you could paint it with the closest match hammerite.  You can't leave the bare steel once it's been treated as it will sump,y rust again - it needs to be painted or sealed.

I don't know about that. Every Ford I can think of was notorious for turning into a pile of dust very quickly.

Damn, 12 years? I think downfall of mine could be because I didn't clean the crud from the wheel arches often, so the damp may have sat there. I have no reason to sell the car other than a desire to have a different one, so I may as well tidy up mine as best as I can and run it into the ground. I'll wire brush the affected areas, put some Kurust on and then paint over it. Any idea where I can get a close match for amethyst?

It would seem that mine didn't get the memo.

I’ve found the same issue on mine, I stripped out the wheel arch lining and the foam cover and there’s a hole that goes about 5” back that was completely packed up with wet mud and debris causing it to rust from the inside out so I’m going to clean it all out grind off as much rust as I can and pack the hole with foam and seal it up watertight with underseal hopefully that will stop it rusting any further

I've a 10 plate Fiesta, it's only done 50,000 miles and always looked after it, over the past two years, the rust inside the arches has been getting really bad, never noticed the rust because of the wheel arch protectors, looks like they don't do the job they are supposed to do, i've since sorted this out, but now i've a new problem, the entire leading edge of the sills which is hidden from view.

To sort the rust out on the lower edges of the sills I've got myself a round wire brush angle grinder attachment, plus a large bottle of 'kill rust' & 10 spray cans of 'waxoil under body sealant'.....never had the chance since buying this stuff back in september because just about every other day its rained.....sick of it.
