I have had handbrake problems on a 2006 Estate. My car has rear disks. Today, on a rather steep slope, with a trailer on, the handbrake would not stop it rolling back. It has been a bit dodgy for a few years. Servicing the brakes and greasing the handbrake cable does help a lot.

Your problem sounds to me like a sticking cable. I assume it held initially, then maybe as the brakes cooled, it ceased to hold. Replacing the cables is a bit of a pain as the exhaust has to be removed. Pumping lots of grease into the cables from the wheel end is messy but a bit easier.
