Laggy when pulling away - Terraclean / EGR?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I know there's a lot of info on here about terraclean already, however I'm not sure if it'd help my issue.

I have a 2015 1.5 120 tdci Zetec S, pulling away in first is very "Laggy", my previous car (Astra sri cdti) had a similar issue and it turned out the problem was the EGR was so blocked it wasn't opening fully to let enough air to flow through, cleaning this sorted the issue.

I guess my question is, would a terraclean also clean out the EGR or would this be a separate thing? The car  has done 21k miles so was considering getting a terraclean anyway (ran on cheap supermarket fuel before I got it) but was hoping I could kill 2 birds with one stone here.

Cheers!
Mark

There has been several software updates to cure issues like this. Depending on what month your car was made you may still have a tiny bit of warranty left on it.

Looking at the mileage and age of the car it may have not been used for motorways and therefore gummed up with crap. Give it some BP Ultimate (Not Shell V-Power, I found my engine doesn't like it) and give it a good blast through the revs up the motorway for half an hour.

It also will adapt to your driving style over time apparently according to what my dealer told me. It's to do with the Ford Ecomode, and they can reset the figures which can cause it to go back to being a bit sluggish.

Failing that, when was the last service done? It should have been done at 12500 with the next one due at 25000.

My 2015 1.5 is on 64k now and still flies like poo off a stick, yet a couple of the 2017 1.5 loaners we had at work were sluggish too apparently.

Cheers for the response @DJ_Andy_M

Unfortunately it was out of warranty in March, however It had a full service (~19k) with it's first MOT at Ford, I specifically asked them to make sure all the ECU software etc was up to date, which they assure me was done but this is Ford, and I have no real way to check (that I'm aware of).

I'd agree, I don't think it's seen much motorway before I bought it (july last year), the past 4 - 5 months it's seen 30~ motorway miles daily so it's definitely getting it's runs, but i'm wondering if the "damage has been done" sort of thing previously.

Interesting, I usually give it Shell fuel save and a tank of V-Power every 3rd tank or so, I'll give it some BP Ultimate on the next tank and see if that makes a difference.

It might "Just be me" but the car definitely feels more responsive some days than others, which I know sounds stupid but I was thinking a clogged EGR could explain this, if it's not able to open fully, 100% of the time, no noticeable black smoke when I boot it though.

It could well be clogged up as you say if it hasn't seen any motorway miles since before you acquired it. No harm in a Terraclean anyway if that is the case.

I found V-Power causes my car to regenerate a lot more frequently which was worrying vs BP Ultimate.

You won't see any black smoke out the back as the DPF is catching all the carbon particles unless you're not burning diesel. Though, my car seems to have days of being sluggish like a teenager. Just depends on what the weather is doing I guess.

Thanks again for the reply @DJ_Andy_M

Mine used to regenerate quite a lot (2/3 times a week) but I dont think it's done it once since I put a tank of V-Power through it, I think I might give it a terra clean then at least I know where I'm at with it all, then i'll keep putting shell / BP in it.

Cheers!
