Focus MK 2 Stuttering

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

New to the forum and all help would be appreciated.

I have a 2005 1.6 Focus . Last week I got the steering pump replaced and everything else was fine with the car at the time. I collected the car from the garage for about 400 metres everything was fine then all of a sudden the car started to stutter badly I kept going to the house and the car cut out once while getting there. While the car was stuttering the engine light and the battery light would flash on and off. I brought the car to the garage and it was plugged into machine to find out what was wrong. I can't remember the exact fault codes but it did say something about crank shaft sensor. The mechanic did say that he would be able to have a look at it on Wednesday evening. My question is would a crank shaft sensor being dirty or faulty cause this fault with car.

Today the car drove lovely for a few miles and then it started again. It seems to be when I slow down the car starts stuttering

All help appreciated

Yes it could be the crank or the cam sensor or a broken wire from the crank.  My friend had very similar symptoms, he had the cam sensor replaced which didn't sort it, and in the end it turned out to a broken wire from the crank sensor.

It's a little odd it should be like that straight from the garage if it was OK when you went.  I'm not sure where the pump is in relation to the crank sensor on your car, just wondering if it could have been knocked while doing the pump?  @TomsFocus would have a better idea.  It could just be a coincidence though.

Assuming it's a 1.6 petrol it'll be a full hydraulic system with the pump at the front of the engine.  So not really close to the crank sensor tbh.

Faulty crank sensors often stop a car starting at all but could also cause poor running and cut out. I wouldn't say this is definitely a crank sensor fault though.

Thanks for replying guys

It's a 1.6 duratec petrol. The only faults that came up were crank shaft sensor. TomsFocus what else do you think it could be could I check for stuff at home ?

So brought car to Mechanic and he looked at the crank shaft sensor. He found that the connection was loose and the wires in it were also not in the connection properly. All replaced and seems to be working fine for now no stuttering since I got it back....

That makes sense. If the wire had been broken or the sensor failed completely the engine would not have run at all since the PCM uses the signal to control all its timings. Your symptoms were consistent with an intermittent connection.
