Would it be possible to replace the battery with a capacitor?  I chose a camera with a capacitor myself after battery issues on a previous one.  No idea if it's a reasonable retrofit though!

someone tried it here doesn't look good

As you say its a cracking camera just a pain to replace the battery 😊

Apparently, they will send a battery for a tenner or will fit you a new battery for £31.20

Both sound attractive for different reasons...

no not at all not the wrong emoji I just think we can do them our self its a bit bad that nextbase have left us to sort there cams out 😊

It’s all very well and good to be able to replace the battery but why buy something that has a lifespan of between 12 & 18 months?

The Viofo A129 duo is a much better setup and costs around £130 for something that can easily compete with the lower end BlackVue and Thinkware cameras which are double the price

I think I'm gonna go for the Viofo A129 Duo. Appreciate the positive reviews. Where's the best place to buy the Viofo and a hardwiring kit? And what's the video quality like in changing light conditions and at night?

Amazon often do lightning deals on the dashcams.
The A129 duo is great. You can buy the hardwire kit from Amazon (you'll need the fuse tap adaptors though) along with lens filters (good for strong sunlight but remove before sunset) and a bluetooth button to protect a segment of recording.
I paid £175 for the 2 cameras, a lens filter for the front camera, the bluetooth button and a 128gb Sandisk ultra micro SD card.
I haven't used the cams at night as I don't do much night driving but as I said above, if you get the filters, take them off before sunset. When I reviewed footage of an evening drive, the camera did adapt quickly to the changing light but was much darker due to me forgetting to remove the filter.
I did some test footage of the cameras during the day when I first installed them (front with polarising filter) so check it out.

i will say 100% and tried and tested for 2 years that Viofo  make good canera and i think there great as fits good not like a big thing stuck there like the netbase style.

I have had A119 front and A119s rear for ages and A1 (A119s) is better in the dark but A119 is amazing being 1440p,never pay stupid prices as there are loads out there.

Absolutely. The Viofo range is very discrete. You can't even see my rear camera unless you are really looking for it and up the spoiler.
I did have an issue with rattle at first as the rear mirror was touching the front camera casing but then I mounted it slightly lower and further to the left.
I'm amazed at the quality of the cameras on the A129.
The Viofo is also better as it has a capacitor rather than a battery so it stores power.

What I don't get is that the MK4 Focus like a lot of new cars is already full of cameras.  Why can't the makers have it so the streams are stored and then can be written to a USB stick in the port?

I was thinking the as a lot of cars have all sorts so why not fit one as standard, you can pick to have added stuff so why not at least an added option.

I've just noticed that Nextbase has released their Series 2 dash cams today, so I might explore that route instead.

Is it easy to hardwire a cam yourself? I'm looking to have front and rear dash cams. I was considering letting Halfords do it but I know experiences can vary between branches.

I'm guessing there's a data protection issue with factory fitting dashcams.  I'd also like to see it happen though, no matter how well you try to hide wiring and cams it's never perfect aftersale lol.

Very easy, the plastic panels just pull off and clip back in and the door rubbers can be peeled out and refitted by hand as well.  Just need a piggyback fuse holder and long enough wire for the job.

I fitted my front and rear dashcam myself. Rear cable runs along top of doors then through the cable boots/sleeves from the inside of the boot to the boot itself.

Power cable runs down rubber seal against a pillar then in behind glovebox. GPS tucked just behind a pillar between it and windscreen.

Only cables you can see from mine are about 1-2cm coming out from headliner/trim to camera.

Just takes a bit of patience, I always wrap the cables in fabric loom tape so it can't rattle anywhere too. Hardest bit for me, was getting the rear cam cable through the sleeve thing, partly just due to the size of the connector on the end.
