EGR Removal/Cleaning - Blanking?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a Focus MK2 1.8 TDCI 2006 saloon model. I've noticed recently that at low idle when pulling off the engine drops revs, kind of like hunting for a second or two and then picks up again. I have a pending P0490 code which is basically the EGR valve. I've heard they are pretty hard to get at in the engine bay so I'm wondering has anyone removed their one before? I'm quite handy at mechanics fortunately enough. I've taken a look at the valve that is located at the top left of the engine itself ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8Uaisbylfk) and it seems to be moving freely.

I'd like to take the whole lot off and give it a good clean. I've also heard of the blanking plate method as well and that there are benefits from blanking it off, for obvious reasons. Just curious to know if the blanking off alone would resolve the hesitation while taking off or would it be better just to clean the whole lot?

Thanks in advance.

Best to clean and fix. Blanking it can cause the EML to come on (which isn't an issue until MOT day). If the tester also sees that it's been blanked you'll fail too.
