Virgin Media Powerline Adapters

Featured Replies

Hi all.

My initial success converting an old Sky router into a remote access point for my Virgin Media Super Hub 3 didn't last long, it kept going off so I disconnected it in the end.

I then found out that if you have the Virgin Media Full House package or higher and have wifi blackspots in your property you can get some VM Powerline Adapters for free which boost the wifi by utilising your house socket ring main as the connecting cables between the wifi sender and receiver units.

Great, that should have sorted my problem but I can't for the life of me get them to work!

They are illuminated as they should be but yet they are doing nothing. I've tried everything in the manual 3 times and also split the names on the hub to give separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz channel identities.

Has anyone got any ideas? I will try contacting VM tomorrow if no one can help.

Cheers

Wes

@WES180 I've had NetGear Powerline 1200 plug in units before and never had any issue with those; they were capable of being both sender and receiver meaning there was no main master plug like there would be in cordless phones for example.

I'm sure there all the same setup.

Have you purchased them new from virgin ?

Are both sockets on the same switch board ?

Hi Lenny.

Yes, they are new from Virgin but supplied free of charge. I've read about some people having issues with Powerlines and the Super Hub 3 so I'm wondering if I have some duff equipment.

They are on the same ring main circuit but it is a large property. I've tried moving the receiver around to different sockets on the circuit but still no joy.

I've not used the Virgin ones but do have other brands and they can be a bit of a faff to setup sometimes.

I'm assuming you have to pair them all/both to each other before you use them, which you have done?

I found that putting them in adjacent sockets to set them up was easier than running between rooms before the setup was completed! 😁

Not sure what else to suggest 🤔

Hi Turvey.

Yeah, did everything 3 times that it says in the book, syncing etc. Even did a factory reset then tried again. According to the lights on the units everything is working as it should be but neither the laptop or our phones and tablets are seeing the boosted signal.

It tells you to set them up in the same room actually with these ones to make it easier as you said.

All sorted now. It turns out that if you follow the instructions they don't work lol.

Basically if you export the hub SSID to the boosters via the WPS buttons as it tells you to then the boosters won't work. After a factory reset my devices had no problem seeing the boosters own SSID and worked perfectly. The only down side was no automatic switching on our devices between the hub and boosters.

This was solved via the VM Connect app which synced them for me to allow movement around the home with the devices seeing only the one SSID. Well, 2 actually, one 2.4ghz and one 5ghz.
