Focus fuel pump

Featured Replies

My 2006 diesel 1.6 focus has so the garage have said has a knackered fuel pump. They said it will cost £500 for a new one and the same to fit it as it is linked in with the timing belt. Is this correct and could I just get a 2ND hand one fitted and sell as I have now a bought a new car . Thanks

The fuel pump is run off of the timing belt so yes it's a big job.

You could get a second hand part but hard to tell how worn it is inside and long it'll last.  A better option would be a refurbished pump at a cost of around £200.  I can't really see it being worth the labour cost anyway?  The whole car must be worth less than a grand even fully working?  Might be better to sell it as spares & repairs to someone who can repair it themselves without any labour cost.

Thanks for the reply, I had a valuation on (on line) who said anything from £1200 to £2000 , the car only has 70000 mile s on the clock. Seems a shame.

How much do you I would get spares or repairs, it still has a mot.

I haven't found online valuations to be overly accurate for private sale myself.  They always seem optimistic unless I'm just a terrible salesman lol.

Does the car still run and drive for collection?  If so I'd say around £600 spares & repairs.  If not you're probably looking at half that due to the hassle of towing or recovery.

Obviously it does also depend on spec, condition and optional extras (leather seats, sat nav, climate control, parking sensors etc) as well though.

Thanks , no sadly it does not run and I would say it is the basic spec but in v good condition. I have just been to another garage who said they could get the part for £279 then labour on top so about £600 + . Then do you do the timing belt while your there and is it worth the hassle of I am selling it. This second garage recommend selling for spares and repairs. I am not sure what to do.

Could be a fault with the EGR valve, we had a 1.6 diesel in at work and thought it was the fuel pump to start with as did the recovery chap. Luckily it started just once for us and threw an EGR code which it hadn’t previously done. Did a little research and found that damp gets into the electrics on the valve and corrodes the internals, eventually shutting other systems down stopping the car from starting.

The cars been fine for a month or more since changing the valve, I took the old one apart and sure enough it was corroded inside, I wouldn’t recommend that though as there’s a spring inside which is impossible to relocate.

Might be worth the garage checking for codes which they probably have already or looking at the live data.
