Injectors or glow plug problem?

Featured Replies

Dear All,

I'd like to ask you if I have something to worry about or not. My car is Ford Focus MK3 1.6 tdci 115 hp, MY2012
Recently I started to feel pretty strong smell of unburned diesel but only in the first second after cold start in the morning. I cannot see smoke or if there is some it is not very thick. Afterwards there is no smoke or smell neither when idling nor under load.
I used Forscan this evening and got DTC P02D1 - Cylinder 3 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Max Limit. I cleared it and ran the car for few minutes. Then checked for DTCs and there were none.
I made live data log where I monitored cylinder contribution rates.
On idle they were between 0.9 - 1.08, at 2000 RPM +/- 100 the rates of all cylinders were 1.00000079.

Other facts - no problems in starting no matter if it is cold (-13 C) or hot, fuel consumption is normal, I haven't noticed any running issues except very slight RPM oscillation at idle.

I'd like to get some advise if I have to do some further diagnostics or to take the injectors put for test or their behavior is normal?
I'm thinking about checking the glow plugs to see if this smell is due failure of one of them

Thank you!

Personally I'd leave it until the symptoms get worse.  Doesn't sound like glowplugs in this case.  That injector is probably getting weak and dripping diesel into the cylinder over night, but as said I really wouldn't waste money on it yet.
