Fuel Gauge Problem

Featured Replies

Hi

I own a 2005 focus 1.6 petrol. Fuel gauge never reads accurately. When I fill the tank it always reads half full, it never goes over half full mark. Then through the contents of the tank the gauge goes up and down, again never above half full 2-3 times and the low fuel light comes on also. I always refill the tank once i hit 300miles.

Is this a fuel gauge problem, or is it the full sender in the tank?

Can either part be replaced easily DIY? I would be fine changing the clocks, but would this be a problem with the milage reading?

thanks for anyhelp that can be giving.

hold the trip reset button and turn the key to ignition and let go when the dash screen comes up test or something to that effect. you can then cycle through and do a gauge test, this makes all your gauges do a full sweep. personall i think its your sender unit though...

have to agree with stef it sounds like the sender as its registering half full so i doubt its the gauge

thanks for that everyone. I have done the test and will fill the day up in a day or two and see what happens. I guessed it maybe the sender, but if it is it will be a garage job.

any idea anyone how much ford would charge for a job like that. I dont trust any independant garages due to pass experiences unfortunately. Even though i dont trust the dealerships either, lol.

Also, can I ask, with the temp gauge, in opperation does it increase to around half way on normal driving? I ask this as it starts at 60 to 120. i rarely see it climb at all above the 60 point. is this normal? I also have a mk2 mondeo which just reads hot an cold and always climbs to the half way point on normal driving.

Old thread, i know, but my battery was flat today so I put it on charge for a couple of hours. Started and ran fine, but fuel gauge is at overfull and when switched off returns to just below half full. Also the temperature gauge is resting at just above it's usually cold starting point. As I say Focus is running fine, just wondering if i can do anything to reset these gauges.

Normally when battery power is lost the values take time to settle back. Normally a good drive around sorts it out.

Sorted now, several on/off turns of the ignition key brings it back in increments, thanks..
