Question on GPF and cylinder deactivation

Featured Replies

Off to the dealers tomorrow to order a new Titanium. Can anyone tell me if they are now fitting GPF's and cylinder deactivation on the 1.0 Ecoboost fitted to the Fiesta?

I am probably wrong, but i was told that they now have GPF's but no cylinder deactivation.

That's my understanding also. I believe the Fiesta engine is still the original (belt cam drive) version but with the addition of GPF. The modified version (chain cam) in the new Focus gets cylinder shutdown I believe.

Thank you Martin. The reason I asked was I doubt the dealer will know.

Your all correct. Fiesta is still the older ecoboost engine so no cyl deactivation and gpf is now fitted on fiestas.

so are gpf's more reliable then dpf's for short city driving? or do these new fiestas need regular motorway driving to keep them ticking over?

It's still early days with GPFs. The blurb when they were introduced suggested they would not be as problematic as DPFs, however there is a long thread on the Focus forum about issues with these which from some members reports have not been completely solved by software updates. These are the revised 1.0 ecoboost; the Fiesta has had GPF on the older version (as noted above) for a year or so and I don't remember seeing any reports of issues with them.

The current Fiesta handbook which you can view online suggests drives of 20 minutes plus in varied conditions to aid GPF regeneration.

On other makes, VW owners have reported driveability issues with their 1.5 engine since GPF was fitted.
