Revs lifting but speed not

Featured Replies

Hi all new to the forum looking for a bit of advice before I take it to ford the problem is intermittent hence I don’t think it can be clutch related which is what I first suspected the car sometimes when I put my foot down the revs will lift but the car won’t speed up then after a little while it just goes away I’ve recently had it serviced new oil, filters etc any ideas or help greatly appreciated

Clutch

first signs of Clutch.

What age/mileage/engine size/fuel is your Fiesta?

I have just had mine done on a Mondeo 1.6 Petrol at 95k - 11 plate. First signs for me was speed not increasing with acceleration although revs increased, then it would bite and off we go. This started with putting load on the transmission in a low gear to accelerate (like from 40 to 60 in 6th) which would be fine normally. So I found myself working the gears a bit more. When it started to do the same but in 3rd gear it made normal driving a bit interesting, nursed it along whilst shopping around for quotes then got it done.

It’s a 1.4 tacit with 149k on I thought clutch but with it not doing it all the time plus no Slipping going up very steep hills etc

If engine speed increases / rev counter goes higher but speed of car does not increase, it can only be the clutch slipping. It is conceivably possible to have a clutch master cylinder fault so the fluid pressure is not released when foot off clutch but very unlikely. If it’s not master cylinder then gearbox needs to come out to get to the clutch.

sounds exactly like when mine started to go. Very intermittent - like once a week - I kept going for about 6 months/3.5k miles (I don't do that many now) and got my money's worth out of it. Being a diesel you might also have a Dual Mass Flywheel - they can be as much or more than the clutch itself.

Thanks guys I’ll get it booked in and new clutch fitted

Shop around - I had various 'you supply the parts' type quotes and then some all in's between £800 and a joker at £1600!

The problem with 'you supply the parts' is if there is a fault a short while later the fitter will say it's not down to him, it was the parts you supplied. So you have you have to pay again. If they supply and fit the parts they can't pass the buck.  This is a particular problem on jobs like the clutch where the labour cost is more than the parts cost.

I am not say never do it, but make sure you are aware of this potential pitfall when deciding.

That's why I avoided those guys like the plague! I was quoted £350+vat for the labour on some of the online quote sites. The clutch itself was fairly reasonable when I was looking around online at factors. The dual mass was more than the clutch! Found myself a local well run garage and cost me £950 all in Inc VAT.  Not sure what it's like in a fiesta but the Mondeo involves removing the air intake, front sub frame and battery before you can start on the transmission. Another reason why I was dubious that quoted to do the work on my drive 🙄
