Weird issue. (crank shaft position sensor.)

Featured Replies

Yo guys, first time poster.

MK7.5, 63 plate, Fiesta ST.

So, a couple of months ago I was driving along the motor way and my car seemed to start randomly dropping all power for around a second and then being fine again, it gradually got worse until it was kangeroo-ing so I pulled over, noticed my rev counter had gone to 0 (engine was still turned on and speedo was working fine) and traction control light was on so i turned engine off.

When i turned it back on the rev counter was still off and traction control light was still on but I had NO warning lights/messages. My engine sounded like it was forcefully dumping all the air it could.

Got it on the code reader and turned out to be the crank shaft position sensor A, so we replaced the sensor with a new one from Ford and all was well until today..

As I set off from home this morning it did the drop power thing just once and then carried on fine and then this afternoon it did the exact same kangeroo-ing, rev counter stopped and traction control light came on. Read codes and surprise surprise, crankshaft position sensor A again along with a few other sensor codes. Cleared them all and took car for a 10 minute drive and all seemed fine.

So I guess my question is, what would cause the sensor to break twice in as many months? And has anyone ever experienced a similar problem?

Appreciate you taking the time to read this absolute dribble 😂

An intermittent fault like that sounds like a wiring or connector fault. The rev counter depends on the crank sensor, and the traction control system will need the rpm, so the symptoms sound consistent with the DTCs. Try unplugging the sensor, cleaning the plug, and bending the wiring harness to the plug. If that makes it either better or worse in a consistent way, then that is a clue.

If wiring tests do nothing, you could try replacing the camshaft sensor. The ECU compares this to the crankshaft sensor, and it has been known to get it wrong as to which is the faulty one.
