Mk6 potentially ready for scrap

I've had a Mk6 for 3 years and it's now clocked around 105k miles. I've had a lot of work done on it including new head gasket, belts, water pump and brake lines to name a few. 

On a recent drive up to a viewpoint I noticed the coolant boiling over. On inspection the radiator fan never came on. 

To diagnose this I've changed the fan relay so far. If I apply power directly to the fan, the fan spins. I know the temperature sensor is on the head and it is working as the hidden menu tells me the exact temperature on the dash. 

Before replacing the ECU does anyone know of anything else I could try? All I can think of is DW40 on connections. 

 

Has anyone had anything similar?



If you have A/C there are two fan relays, slow and fast.  Slow fan relay inside car, fast in box by battery.  Slow feed is via resistor.

There are a number of threads on here, in Fiesta, and Fusion re boiling in header tank.  You might also think about header tank cap releasing pressure too early.

 

on an older car where it's difficult to justify lots of time and money I would wire up a switch inside the car to manually switch the fan on and off as I saw fit according to the temp gauge. 30 years ago I had a mk1 fiesta on which I did this and in more recent years a reliant scimitar SE5A with an electric fan conversion with a switch on the dashboard. It's not ideal but it works. 

(to avoid an electrical fire make sure you use wire of suitable thickness and a fuse)

I have a manual thermostat wired into my fan, i set the temperature (90 degrees) on the dial and my fan works absolutely fine now

Bonkers. The car is not worn out. It has a minor fault, cheaply repairable. Its true value is in its utility. Melting a viable car down is vandalism.
