Is the water pump driven by the cambelt? The garage put a new cambelt kit on but no water pump as they said it wasn't needed.

 It’s driven off the aux belt.

most of the belts I’ve done on these engines the customer usually opts to leave the pump. Not had any pump failures yet.

As stef said, I was advised by both the garage I used for servicing and the main Ford dealer to avoid replacing the water pump if it wasn't showing signs of leaking or wear. I left mine when I did my belt.
