Key lost by mechanic

Featured Replies

Hi everyone ,

bit of advice pls the mechanic has lost/ misplaced my car key (ka 63 plate no central locking)

Now whilst I still have 1 key 😩 what is the best way to get a replacement ? If I get ford to replace it and presume it will need coding to start car But as car is manual locking if someone finds the lost key they will still be able to get into car and start it .

Your advice pls

Since your mechanic lost/misplaced your key he/she should pay for a replacement - I would get him to order one from Ford and make sure it is coded for you to use

His problem not yours

Cheers for reply, if he goes and gets a new one from ford will the one that he has misplaced still work if found? Or can ford just reprogramme new key and the one that is not lost, so making the lost one useless ?

hope that makes sense😂

AFAIK the "old" ost key will remain programmed for the car

I'm not at all sure the code can be varied as it's my impression each car has a unique code stored in the ECM (electronic brain)

If he later finds it you have gained a key

If it is potential misuse you are concerned about - would a steering wheel lock give you (cheaper) peace of mind?

Thanks , yeah this mechanic has had me over a treat

pls see my other forum ref cambelt 😪😪😪

Aaaah yes I had read that tale of woe and gross incompetence - take him for all he's worth shouldn't be trading - what competent professional loses/misplaces a key for the car they are working on? :giljotiini:

We lose keys about once every 3 weeks, well the drivers do at our place. I'm the one having to code new keys in. To be fair we have 4000 sets of keys to keep safe. Lol

My mechanic attempted to wind me up by 'fishing' a nearby drain with a magnetic pole the other day, what a hoot that was!

Thanks for replies, losing a set out of 4000 understandable, losing set when 1 man band probably 10 sets a week 😩

The mechanic ( use term loosely) is incomptent at best.

any ideas best way to move this issue forward ie trading standards

intend to bill him for my time to get keys sorted as well as cost of recoding etc

Best place for keys ?

main dealer

mobile auto locksmith

I think you mean no remote locking?  It must have central locking surely!?

As you don't need remote, just a blade cut with immobiliser, high street locksmiths like Timspons should be cheap enough.  You could ask at Ford though, I had a plain key cut for about £8 there lol, didn't have immobiliser coded though, can't remember how much I was quoted for that annoyingly.

Believe it or not no central locking ka studio plus 😱.

Just a bit worried that there is a key somewhere with mechanic that will open and start  car if it got into wrong hands .

This cowboy has caused me so much hassle it beyond belief .

Have a read of this - cheap easy and effective https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/small-claims-court/

I'd say incompetent would be putting it mildly.  See if you could get a quote from the main dealer to change the locks in case the key is "floating around" somewhere and then make him pay for it.  A decent mechanic would do that himself if he's at fault, but this one seems far from decent.

For all you know he could have "lost" the key on purpose and in 6 months your car could suddenly get stolen.

Great minds think alike boys and girls

The more I think about it the more I want locks changed etc

The small claims court/ trading standards are going to be getting a call mon mornin.

This is the straw that broke the camels back 😱

Wow...what does the 'Plus' include over Studio then?  I don't think I've owned anything newer than '98 without remote locking let alone central locking! 😮

In that case I don't think you need to worry about anyone nicking it, not desirable enough to be worth the risk of getting caught surely!
