Exhaust Center Section Removal [WTF was Ford thinking?]

Featured Replies

Aternoon,

My wife's fusion has a slight exhaust leak coming from the center section which i need to fix soon. Upon inspection I've notced that a few bolts [located towards the front of the car] are sandwiched between the subframe and underside of the car and look almost impossible to get too.

Does anyone here have any experience replacing this exhaust part and how they removed those 2 bolts?

I've found a cheap Haynes manual so when that arrives maybe it will shine some light?

No one wants to be that guy that pays a garage to replace an exhaust system, but I feel this might be one of those jobs you immediately regret as soon as you start it.

Thanks,

And how about that bracing strut on the underside of the floor pan that is in the way ?  Held in by eight rusty bolts (at least when you start !).  I have been putting plusgas on mine, after having changed a complete system on a Fiesta which also had two recalcitrant bolts at the front. I was just watching when it was done by my friendly mechanic who was struggling with them, even up on a four poster.

It was easier to change a complete system on a 2.8i Capri on the drive !

I'd say the exhaust is probably one of the better jobs to leave to a garage...  Having a ramp and access to heating and cutting tools are a huge benefit for it.  Take it to a tyre & exhaust place and you'll probably be surprised how little they charge compared to the hassle of laying on your back under the car getting rust in your eyes...
