Ford Fiesta MK7 Spongy Brake Pedal

Featured Replies

Looking at buying a Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6 2010.

The current owner pointed out that the brake was spongy (had to press a long way down to work). When I drove it, it was the case but the brake worked fine. He showed me that ford had looked at it in the past and said it’s common with the cars and nothing to worry about. They’ve had the car since new so they know all about it, it was looked at years ago and they’ve carried on driving it since

I’ve researched a bit and found others with the problem. Should I avoid the car or not worry about? Car below

The brakes on the MK7 Fiesta's are nothing special, of all the ones I've owed/driven from the 1.6 petrol to the 1.4tdci van (although all have been with drum rear brakes)  you have to press them half way down, you especially notice it  when you jump into a different car and notice the difference.

Some (early-ish) mk7s had an issue where air would get caught in the ABS pump which would give the brake pedal a lot of travel.
It’s a relatively easy fix. It just needs a brake fluid change while running the ABS pump via a diagnostic machine. Most garages should be able to do it.

My mk7 had a brake pedal that might aswell have been an on/off switch. You had to brake very gently to not give yourself whiplash.
