Replacement ECU

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have recently sold my Ford Fiesta Zetec S 2006 and the buyer has got in touch after a couple of weeks saying the Engine Control Unit needs replacing. The fan isn't coming on and is causing a coolant overheating problem. The car had passed an MOT text a week before it was sold. They have been quoted £800 for the part and £600 for labour. I've spoken to the garage I take my car to usually and they advised a second hand ECU could be purchased and recoded to suit my old car at a fraction of the cost. I was wondering if many people have replaced their ECU with a second hand one and if they had any issues? Or if anyone has any other comments any information is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Dave

Are they expecting you to pay?

If it was a private sale then you're not liable as the car would be 'sold as seen'.

Unless they can prove you were aware of a fault at the time of sale they have no legal recourse.

Tbh I think they're taking the mickey, £600 labour is a bit rich, it just needs the cluster and keys coding to match in order to allow the immobiliser system to function properly.

Simpler and cheaper to buy a matched ecu, cluster and fobs off ebay and then it's all plug and play.

Prices for full sets are around about £200 off ebay.
